The original asker did not ask what the commonest form is.
He asked what the correct form is.
As others have said, I believe the deepest origins of the word
support the spelling USENET. Tradition is a stronger force than
popularity, in my opinion.
However, I also don't understand the call for standardization.
If it's spelled both ways everywhere, fine with me.
