I post my FAQ on a two-week cycle. I observe that the number of requests
that would be answered by the FAQ drops off after I post, and then builds
up again after a few days.

I interpret this to mean that many sites do not honor Expires: properly,
or else that the questioners are too clueless even to look back for a FAQ.
Probably some of both :-(.

Another person who posts a FAQ into many of the same newsgroups as I do
uses the infrequent-FAQ-with-frequent-pointer method. I haven't seen any
evidence that it helps. I suspect a lot of newbies are uncomfortable with
FTP or the other tools that might be used to fetch a FAQ, so they just
post their question instead. Perhaps the spread of WWW will improve
matters.
