I'm using MS-DOS, which is about as challenged as an OS can get.
Nevertheless, the FTP client I use translates long filenames into 8.3
filenames which DOS requires, and removes 'naughty' characters like spaces.

The "problem" is caused by godawful OSes and bad FTP software. That's where
it should be fixed.
