It seems to me there is a difference between charging for a network
connection by the byte and charging for a CD. The network service
provider, like a library which charges a membership fee, is selling access
to a wide variety of ever-changing information and services. The disk
vendor, like a bookstore, is selling personal, fast, no-downtime access to
a specific reference work or works. And unless I am mistaken, authors do
not receive royalties based on how many people read a book in the library
or borrow it. Authors' royalties are, however, related to the number of
people who decide to purchase personal copies of their books.
Can someone tell me why a public-library model of Usenet might not be
applicable in this dicussion?
