CURRENT INTELLIGENCE MEMORANDUM

SUBJECT: Preliminary Evaluation of Recenton Western Tibet

Highly reliable information concerning areas of western Tibet and adjacent Indian territoryecember. This information disclosed the existence of two previously unobserved east-west roads within northern Ladakh. These roads provide greater mobility for Chinese Communist forward forces in this area. However, these are subsidiary roads and will not enable them to increase the total force strenRth that could be supported by the previously known access roads.

Generally, conditions under which thewas obtained on this occasion were notand the information provided was not There was no information which wouldto our knowledge of Chinese Communist troopin tho area. No significant troop movements or logistics activity were noted, nor was thereon Communist airfields ln the area.

It ls possible that more favorableon another occasion would pormlt theof more definitive data.

Information provided on the Indian portion of Ladakh reveals nothing of unusual significance. The installations reported at Leh were those expected. Leh ls the location of an Indian army division
