The statistics in this handbook update and supersede those in our previous publications*

Trie term Communiet countries refers to: the USSK, China, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, German Democratic Republicungary, Poland, Rcmiania, Cuba, North Korea, and Yugoslavia.

For purposes of this report, the term leas developed oountriee includes; ll countries of Africa except the Republic of South Africa;ll countries of East Asia except Bong Rong and Japan; Malta, Portugal* and Spain in all countries in the Caribbean and Latin America except Cube; and ll countries in the Kiddle East and South Asia, except Israel. Although Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam have been Communist countriesata prior to this date are included here for historical purposes. |
