This publication is the Tirsteries to be issueduarterly basis summarizing production of aircraft in the Sino-Soviet Bloc. Trie estimates presented arc intended to supersede thosein previous CIA reports and are published to satisfy consumer requests for the most recent estimates of aircraft production in the Bloc. Both the methodology and the technical terms employed in previous reports have been utilized in the present report. Changes in the estimates hove resulted from later information and analysis rather than from any methodological change. No interagency coordina-

1. Production.
Prom the first to the second quarter5 the production of aircraft in the Sino-Soviet Bloc declinedercent, in numbers of aircraft The decline is principally in the output of fighter aircraft in the USSR, where the production of the Frescos being replaced by the production of later models. In contrast to the reduction in numbers, an increase ofercent in total airframe weight produced was reached during the This 'increase results from the trend toward greater weight in modern aircraft. pecific example of this trend in the current estimate Is the conversion from the production of the Fresco at certain Soviet plants to that of later models which weighoercent more than the Fresco.
* The estimates and conclusions contained in this memorandum represent the best Judgment of ORR as of lb
** The estimated production of aircraft in the Sino-Soviet Bloc3 toy number, is given in Table.elow, and in Table.elow, by airframe weight.
he production of aircraft in the USSR,3 toy number, is given in Table-elow, and by airframe weight, in Table k, p.elow.
The production of aircraft in the European Satellites3
toy number, is given in Table-elow, and by airframe
weight, in Table.elow.
The USSR produces most of the aircraft manufactured in the Sino-Soviet Bloc. Ofircraft produced during the second quarterircraft, or aboutercent, were produced in thend theircraft, were produced in the European There is still no indication that Communist
China or the Asiatic Satellites arc producing aircraft. On the basis of airframeercent of the production in theloc took place in the USSR. The difference between the Soviet share of the productioneight basis as opposednit basis is explained by the production of relatively lighter aircraft by the European Satellites.
Combat aircraft comprised aboutercent of the total aircraft production. In units, during the second quarter Thisremains essentially unchanged from the first quarter
