                     REQUEST FOR DISCUSSION (RFD)
             unmoderated group rec.video.desktop.toaster

Newsgroup line:
rec.video.desktop.toaster	The Video Toaster and Flyer systems.

This is a formal Request For Discussion (RFD) for the creation of a
world-wide unmoderated Usenet newsgroup rec.video.desktop.toaster.
This is not a Call for Votes (CFV); you cannot vote at this time.
Procedural details are below.

RATIONALE: rec.video.desktop.toaster

The Video Toaster system from NewTek was the first desktop editing
system to run on a personal computer and it revolutionized the video
world. It is the most widely used and well known desktop video
system to date, yet there is no newsgroup to accomodate it's many
users. Between the video toaster, and now the new video Flyer system
which hooks up to the toaster, there are over 50,000 users of this
desktop video system around the world but no specific area on the
internet where they can discuss toaster and flyer related issues.

A good percentage of traffic of rec.video.desktop and
rec.video.production deals with the video toaster and flyer, and
those newsgroups are allready cluttered as it is because they have
far too wide of a topic range. Rec.video.desktop is only one group,
and it encompasses the discussion of EVERY desktop video system there
is. If one was to include every different card, computer, and device
that can be used with video, there are hundreds of desktop systems.
It makes logical sense that the biggest and most widely used of
these - the video toaster, should be the first to break off into it's
own group. There are so many toaster and flyer users on the internet
who need a general area of discussion, and there are more getting on
the net everyday. With NewTek's plans to release the video toaster
for windows, the number of users will only increase.

Rec.video.desktop.toaster will give toaster/flyer users around
the world a place where they can specifically communicate with
eachother without searching through gobs of unrelated messages, and
it will also be one less system to further clutter up the already
overcrowded rec.video.desktop, and rec,video.production.

It is also important to realize that the video toaster is not just a
video card that can mix and match with thousands of different
combinations such as some of the other systems discussed in
rec.video.desktop are, but it is in fact a total and complete
system. Many of the posts in rec.video.desktop are about cards and
software that are for the ibm or mac platforms in general, and
these have no relavence on the toaster desktop system.

The flyer is also grouped with the toaster, because it simply
expands upon the features of the toaster from linear to non-linear
editing. There have been some mailing lists that have provided a good
source of information, but they have gone up and down, and are not
convienent or reliable enough as a newsgroup would be.

Rec.video.desktop.toaster is a natural name to give the newsgroup,
since the video toaster is a desktop video system, and the group
would be easily recongnized as dealing specifically with the toaster.
There is the possibilty of naming the group
rec.video.desktop.toaster-flyer But since the flyer is simply a
non-linear expansion to the video toaster system, and not a device
that is it's own entity or that can be used with any other system
other than the toaster, it would make more sense to name the group
rec.video.desktop.toaster

This would fit in correctly in the hierarchy and be specific.

CHARTER: rec.video.desktop.toaster

The newsgroup rec.video.desktop.toaster will be for the discussion
of the use of the NewTek Video Toaster and Flyer systems, and all
related information to those systems. This would include tips and
hints on use of the many various aspects of the Toaster and Flyer
systems, intergration with other video equipment. Video and sound
discussion relating to the Toaster and Flyer, discussion of projects
that have been put together on the Toaster and Flyer, additional
software and hardware products reviews and discussion, as well as an
informational exchange and meeting ground between users of the
Toaster and Flyer systems. Buy/sell messages for toaster/flyer
related hardware and software would also be acceptable.

END CHARTER.

PROCEDURE:

This is a request for discussion, not a call for votes. In this phase
of the process, any potential problems with the proposed newsgroup
should be raised and resolved. The discussion period will continue
for a minimum of 21 days (starting from when the first RFD for this
proposal is posted to news.announce.newgroups), after which a Call For
Votes (CFV) may be posted by a neutral vote taker if the discussion
warrants it. Please do not attempt to vote untill this happens.

All discussion of this proposal should be posted to news.groups.

This RFD attemps to comply fully with the USenet newsgroup creation
guidelines outlined in "How to Create a New Usenet Newsgroup" and "How

that a newsgroup, with its greater availability, could be expected
to be even busier.

Rec.video.desktop.toaster will give Toaster/Flyer users around

related hardware and software would also be acceptable. The newsgroup
would also provide a natural area for vendors of third party products
which support or enhance the Toaster and the Flyer to support those
products by answering questions from users, and providing notices of
enhancements and updates.

"Spamming" of commercial or other messages not related to the topic
of the newsgroup rec.video.desktop.toaster, and other violations
of standard UseNet newsgroup netiquette, as expressed in the UseNet
FAQs on the subject, are not permitted.

Binaries posts are not permitted in rvdt.

Vendors who wish to post information concerning Toaster or Flyer
related products should post contact information and brief
descriptions, and brief price lists (recommended not more than 10
to 20 items), and should exercise reasonable judgement in frequency
of "ad" postings. The newsgroup is for information, and is not a
marketplace, and posting of ads more often than weekly by any vendor
primary or third party, is discouraged.

Rec.video.desktop.toaster will give Toaster/Flyer users around
the world a place where they can specifically communicate with
each other without searching through gobs of unrelated messages, and
it will also be one less system to further clutter up the already
overcrowded rec.video.desktop, and rec.video.production.

It is also important to realize that the Video Toaster is not just a
video card that can mix and match with thousands of different
combinations such as some of the other systems discussed in
rec.video.desktop are, but it is in fact a total and complete
system. Many of the posts in rec.video.desktop are about cards and
software that are for the IBM or Mac platforms in general, and
these have no relevance on the Toaster desktop system.

The Flyer is also grouped with the Toaster, because it simply
expands upon the features of the Toaster from linear to non-linear
editing.

Rec.video.desktop.toaster is a natural name to give the newsgroup,
since the Video Toaster is a desktop video system, and the group
would be easily recognized as dealing specifically with the Toaster.
There is the possibility of naming the group
rec.video.desktop.toaster-flyer But since the Flyer is simply a
non-linear expansion to the Video Toaster system, and not a device
that is its own entity or that can be used with any other system
other than the Toaster, it would make more sense to name the group
rec.video.desktop.toaster

This would fit in correctly in the hierarchy and be specific.

CHARTER: rec.video.desktop.toaster

The newsgroup rec.video.desktop.toaster will be for the discussion
of the use of the NewTek Video Toaster and Flyer systems, and all
related information to those systems. This would include tips and
hints on use of the many various aspects of the Toaster and Flyer
systems, integration with other video equipment, video and sound
discussion relating to the Toaster and Flyer, discussion of projects
that have been put together on the Toaster and Flyer, additional
software and hardware products reviews and discussion, as well as an
informational exchange and meeting ground between users of the
Toaster and Flyer systems. Buy/sell messages for Toaster/Flyer
related hardware and software would also be acceptable.

Binaries posts are not permitted in r.v.d.t.

Vendors who wish to post information concerning Toaster or Flyer
related products should post contact information and brief
descriptions, and brief price lists (recommended not more than 10
to 20 items), and should exercise reasonable judgement in frequency
of "ad" postings. The newsgroup is for information, and is not a
marketplace, and posting of ads more often than weekly by any vendor
primary or third party, is discouraged.

rec.video.desktop.toaster	The Video Toaster and Flyer systems.

RATIONALE: rec.video.desktop.toaster

The Video Toaster (TM) system from NewTek was the first desktop editing
system to run on a personal computer, and it revolutionized the video
world. It is the most widely used and well known desktop video
system to date, yet there is no newsgroup to accommodate its many
users. Between the Video Toaster, and now the new Video Flyer system
which hooks up to the Toaster, there are over 50,000 users of this
desktop video system around the world, but no specific area on the
internet where they can discuss toaster and flyer related issues.

A good percentage of traffic of rec.video.desktop and
rec.video.production deals with the Video Toaster and Flyer, and
those newsgroups are already cluttered as it is because they have
far too wide a topic range. Rec.video.desktop is only one group,
and it encompasses the discussion of EVERY desktop video system there
is. If one were to include every different card, computer, and device
that can be used with video, there are hundreds of desktop systems.
It makes logical sense that the biggest and most widely used of
these - the Video Toaster, should be the first to break off into its
own group. There are so many Toaster and Flyer users on the internet
who need a general area of discussion, and there are more getting on
the net everyday. With NewTek's plans to release the Video Toaster
for Windows, the number of users will only increase.

There have been some mailing lists that have provided a good
source of information, but they have gone up and down, and are not
as convenient or reliable as a newsgroup would be. The current
Toaster mailing list is quite busy, with more than 800 subscribers,
and with traffic of several hundred messages per week. This indicates
that a newsgroup, with its greater availability, could be expected
to be even busier.

Rec.video.desktop.toaster will give Toaster/Flyer users around
the world a place where they can specifically communicate with
each other without searching through gobs of unrelated messages, and
it will also be one less system to further clutter up the already
overcrowded rec.video.desktop, and rec.video.production.

It is also important to realize that the Video Toaster is not just a
