This is a Request For Discussion to create the new Usenet group
rec.games.playing-cards.

Information on the proposed group:

Newsgroups line:
rec.games.playing-cards Games which use playing cards.

Status: Unmoderated

Charter:

This group is for discussion of games played with playing cards. This
includes the usual American 52-card deck, subsets and multiples (including
jokers) or it, and the traditional decks of other countries. Thus, such
games as Hearts, Piquet, Canasta, and War of Flowers would all be legitimate
subjects for this group. The only exceptions are games which already have a
group, such as Poker (which is commonly discussed on rec.gambling) and
Bridge (which has rec.games.bridge).

Note: this group is NOT intended for discussion of trading-card games such
as Magic: the Gathering or Illuminati: the New World Order.

Rationale:

While games such as the ones mentioned above are very popular, in both
face-to-face and computer versions, there is currently no Usenet group on
which they can reasonably be discussed (as rec.games.misc is almost entirely
about computer games). This has led to such oddities as Hearts discussion
on rec.games.bridge.

Andy Lipscomb Mthemagpie@delphi.com> posted an RFD for
rec.games.playing-cards on August 16, 1994. The response was favorable
and Andy indicated that he planned to take it a vote. Unfortunately, he
did not do so due to unexplained problems which he referred to in a post
to news.groups in September or October.

I am re-issuing this RFD in order to start the ball rolling again.

The text which follows is Lipscomb's original text, unedited. During the
1st RFD, two categories of comments were made:

* hey, why not include that card game "Magic, The Gathering?"

and

* hey, why rule poker out of bounds for the new group?

Magic, The Gathering obviously has enough groups and it would be foolish
to try to drag the trading-cards groups under yet another new hierarchy.
As for poker being included, I am content either way; poker is one of the
main subjects in rec.gambling but if people *want* to discuss it in
rec.games.playing-cards, I wouldn't mind changing the charter.

CHARTER

This group is for discussion of games played with playing cards. This
includes the usual American 52-card deck, subsets and multiples (including
jokers) or it, and the traditional decks of other countries. Thus, such
games as Hearts, Spades, Piquet, Canasta, War, and Euchre would all be
legitimate subjects for this group. The only exceptions are games which
already have a group, such as Poker (which is commonly discussed on
rec.gambling) and Bridge (which has rec.games.bridge). The gambling aspect
of card-playing should be discussed on rec.gambling, as should any card
games commonly played for monetary stakes. Note: this group is NOT
intended for discussion of trading-card games such as Magic: the Gathering
or Illuminati: the New World Order. The rec.games.trading-cards.*
hierarchy is the appropriate place for discussion of collectible card
games.

Card-playing is very popular but, as noted above,
there is no suitable place on USENET to discuss the subject.

Please also note that despite the oft-stated wish of a small number of
namespace purists to come up with a hierarchy in which both playing card
games and trading card games can fit, the rec.games.trading-cards.*
hierarchy has just come into existence within the last few months (the
third reorganization of the trading cards groups so far) and it does not
seem worthwhile to inconvenience everyone associated with those groups and
ask to move them yet again.
