                     REQUEST FOR DISCUSSION (RFD)
          unmoderated group comp.soft-sys.middleware.opendoc

Summary : For discussion of the OpenDoc(tm) component technologies.

This RFD has been posted in accordance with the Guidelines for
Newsgroup Creation, with content based on previous RFDs.

RATIONALE

Currently a majority of the public discussion about the OpenDoc
related technologies takes place on a mailing list on the CI Labs
server. The traffic on just the CI Labs lists, as well as their
membership have continued to balloon in size, leading to the need
for a common forum. In addition, components and component
technology are critical to the future development path of
software. The 'mix and match' nature of parts has been of interest
to developers and users both. The OpenDoc technologies, being
flexible and non-proprietary have been the center of a great deal
of discussion. Discussion has taken place on all of the comp lists
which the RFD has been cross-posted to. Since the OpenDoc
technologies are also cross- platform, it is beneficial to
interested parties to have a single news group to search, instead
of looking through many different platform specific newsgroups
when interested in comments on the OpenDoc technologies from a
cross-platform point of view.

CHARTER

The comp.softsys.opendoc newsgroup will be open to discussion of the
OpenDoc technologies. Discussion might include:

- Use of the OpenDoc technologies by developers
- Specific OpenDoc related technologies such as Bento(tm), CORBA(tm),
  SOM(tm), OpenDoc, or OSA(tm)
- OpenDoc in relation to development standards. (for example, OpenDoc
  and CORBA)
- The implications of component software for the software market.
- Benefits of the OpenDoc component software architecture for users
- The role and activities of CI Labs (Component Integration
  Laboratories)
- How to participate in the further development of the OpenDoc
  technologies.

OPENDOC TECHNOLOGY OVERVIEW

The OpenDoc architecture is a vendor-neutral industry standard for
software integration that enables distributed, cross-platform
component software. It is a comprehensive and cohesive set of
services that utilize proven technologies such as IBM Corporation's
System Object Model (SOM), and Apple Computer, Inc.'s Open Scripting
Architecture (OSA and Bento). The OpenDoc technologies also include
extensive human interface support, sophisticated linking and storage
management, and ComponentGlue, from WordPerfect the Novell
Applications Group, which provides full OpenDoc/OLE interoperability.
OpenDoc technology will provide benefits for the entire software
industry, from end-users to information systems (IS) managers to
independent software vendors.

OpenDoc component software will allow users to seamlessly integrate
text, graphics, tables, multimedia, scripts and other forms of
content into a single working document. Instead of having to
maneuver among applications, users will easily access any tool or
editor work with different types of content into a compound document.
OpenDoc component software will ease the computing experience, while
ensuring a greater level of customizability and flexibility.

IS managers want to use computers in more strategic ways: OpenDoc
technology will enable development of custom applications,
interoperability on multiple platforms and access to applications,
information and services distributed on heterogeneous networks. With
the wide and often complex range of platforms and applications, IS
managers can use OpenDoc to simplify operations while protecting and
leveraging existing investments in training, equipment and software.

PRECEDENT

There currently is no comp. heirarchy that addresses middleware.
Other multi-platform, middlware have be placed in comp.soft-sys,
however this heirarchy is viewed by the Usenet administration as
lacking structure, thus the comp.soft-sys.middleware alternative, as a
new structured area for future and current middleware newsgroups. Some
current middleware newsgroups include:
comp.soft-sys.dce, comp.soft-sys.powerbuilder, comp.soft-sys.nextstep.

MAILING LISTS

The mailing lists hosted on CILabs.ORG are growing in size and interest.
The following are two announce groups, and a copy of the RFD will be
forwarded to these, as the subscribers have an interest in an alternative
to high traffic mailing lists, and scattered, platform specific news
discussions relating to various OpenDoc technologies.

OpenDoc-Announce@CILabs.ORG
Bento-Announce@CILabs.ORG
ODF-Interest@CILabs.ORG

FUTURE CALL FOR VOTES

After a discussion period of 21 days, if there are no overwhelming
objections to the proposed group, there will be a Call For Votes
(CFV) posted to the same groups as this RFD. The voting period will
be at least 21 days. If the group passes by receiving 100 more YES
votes than NO votes, and (at least) twice as many YES votes as NO
votes, it will be created.

The RFD for comp.soft-sys.opendoc is being cross-posted to the
following relevant news groups:

  news.announce.newgroups, news.groups, comp.os.os2.advocacy,
  comp.os.ms-windows.advocacy, comp.os.ms-windows.programmer.misc,
  comp.sys.mac.advocacy, comp.sys.mac.oop.macapp3,
