Speech contains systems of phonetic, syntactic and lexical markers of social group (for example gender, ethnicity, age, personality, and so on) and social situation. These are expressed unconsciously, or may be manipulated towards a desired effect. See also ACCOMMODATION THEORY and ACT OF IDENTITY.
