General Willam Rosencrans of the Union forces moved his forces in order to close a non-existant gap in his lines, creating an actual gap for Confederate General Braxton Bragg to exploit, resulting in massive casualties on both sides.

Massive casualties on both sides, though the Union was ultimately victorious. Led to the Gettysburg Address, one of the most famous speeches in American history.
