He's tiny, green, and funny-looking, and he sounds like a muppet version of Confucius, which is not really what you expect in a Jedi master. This odd juxtaposition of underwhelming appearance with the reality of his actually quite impressive powers made him all the more endearing.

Like a huge, lovable dog, Chewbacca is an appealing symbol of loyalty, always at Han Solo's side. The fact that he was so expressive that you could almost always understand what he meant, even though he could only make his trademark noises, rather than speak, makes him one of the great characters.

C-3PO is basically a nerd in robot form, which provided many opportunities for humor in the Star Wars movies. Even though he was a little full of himself and could be condescending, you could forgive him that because he always ended up in funny situations, usually resulting in his dismemberment.
