What could be better than a lion who learns to love vegetables? Gustaf Tenggren’s illustrations are truly beautiful, and the picture of the lion thoughtfully tasting the carrot stew is wonderfully evocative.

The story line is very imaginative and sweet. I love the thought that baby trains need to learn how to be big trains. My favorite class is “Pulling the Diner Without Spilling the Soup.”

Gustaf Tenggren’s illustrations make this story come alive for children, and the ending, with the contented kitten rolling happily on its back in the field after “the best day ever” is a truly happy ending.

Any story that has pirate cats is worth reading. The illustrations of mice in other parts of the world (e.g., Eskimo mice and mice dancing the hula in grass skirts) are adorable.
