While Hollywood turned this into a household name, Lord of the Rings is simply unique in because of its epic feeling, background stories (as further ellaborated in Silmarillion, Unfinished Tales of Numenore and Middle Earth, and so forth) and the unprecedented impact it's made on modern day culture. While the Middle Earth cycle could easily stand up against every collection of myths in history, it becomes even more remarkable as it's mostly the product of a single man's creative spark.
