While the Russian army did retreat, it was not destroyed. Napoleon lost about 1/3 of his forces in September. Moscow had been stripped bare. Despite France driving the Russian army from the field, it eventually led to Napoleon having to withdraw from Russia, so truly a success for Russia.

This long siege eventually led to the Ottomans taking Constantinople and renaming it Istanbul. This allowed greater ability for the Ottomans to move into Europe. It also left the Orthodox Church without a central city to look to.
