Whirlpool G2 MCE6000 Microwave Oven

Rating: 4 out of 5
  • Currently 4.0/5.0

When our old microwave decided to retire, we searched for one we hoped would give us better service and more advanced features. We thought the Whirlpool G2 MCE6000 was a model that would last awhile.

I knew it had some good features aside from simple microwaving, but I never used it much for anything except microwaving and reheating foods until after we had it awhile.

After we had used it for over a year, we decided to experiment with some of the other cooking methods it was capable of. One thing happened almost by accident when it rained on a day we were going to grill hamburgers. It seemed an excellent time to try the grilling feature of the Whirlpool G2, and it came through better than we had hoped.

A G2 microwave doesn't singe the burger the way that a grill might, but it does cook it thoroughly, unlike the way older microwaves cook meat. There is some mess to clean up afterward, but due to the special round pan that goes under the rack, most of it doesn't get inside the oven.

This oven is 1.7 cu. ft. so it can handle larger items than some other over-the-stove microwaves. The 1,100 watts of power generally means faster cooking times than with other microwave ovens, and the 1,500 watts of grilling power makes short work of steaks, hot dogs, chicken, and burgers.

Bacon cooks up quickly and easily using the specially included sizzle pan so BLT's can be made in a snap without a greasy mess. This oven bakes, steams, grills, sizzles, defrosts, reheats, simmers, softens, and melts. It does a great job melting chocolate in a glass Pyrex measuring cup without burning it.

This unit actually doubles as a second oven when you have a large meal to prepare. The settings and time frame may have to be adjusted to make the food come out the same as it would in a conventional oven, but it does save electricity over the conventional oven cooking method. A cook can easily learn to prepare almost anything in the G2.

One downside of this unit is the vent grille. It is made of a type of plastic that is very difficult to wipe clean. The plastic pull handle on the door is also subject to cracking if you are not careful.

The cost of this wonderful oven is between $790 and $900, and it is well worth the money if you need an over the stove microwave and vent hood combination.
