We all like to think we're like Tiger Woods - well on the golf course at least! So the temptation is to purchase all the expensive gear, but being nothing more than a weekend player whose favourite hole is the 19th, I thought I'd try for some middle ground when I bought my first set recently. My choice was the Tour Edge HP7 set, which included everything I required for a very reasonable $555.

The woods, with graphite shafts, are oversized with a low centre of gravity to help launch long shots and came with head covers. The irons are of lightweight steel for those sweet spot shots, which unfortunately I'm still trying to master, but certainly no blame can be attributed to the 'tool', it is most definitely user error!

The driver is 460cc titanium and this has toe and heel weighting to be more merciful on off-centre tee-shots; whilst the putter is of the mallet style variety and does give a lovely feel for those delicate little shots. The whole set has a good and responsive feel to it and is ideal for someone who can play the game, but are not likely to be challenging the professionals any time soon.

For that reason there are no blades in the lightweight stand bag; the thin headed irons don't really have any place in none pro players sets, something Tour Edge have recognised. This set of clubs are definitely basic, but the price cannot be scoffed at. For a similar selection within the same range the costs are upwards of $150 higher. Indeed, probably one of the closest is the Cleveland CG1 Tour irons, which granted are slightly more advanced in technical terms, and may well offer more consistent striking, but would set you back around $899, which obviously is quite a hike.

Until such time as my game suddenly perks up I'll be more than happy to stick with the Tour Edge HP7's; in actual fact if my game does improve I'll still stick with them, as it would be the very same that I was improving with, so I'd be foolish to change!
