I have always done my own ironing. My mother would not iron. She didn't see the point when there were perfectly good laundry services available, and my wife can't iron to save her life, choosing to wear jeans and tee shirts rather than anything that needs starch or pressing. So it was me that first started to notice when our old iron began leaving rust spots on my work shirts. I knew when I saw the spots that it was time to invest in a new iron.
I'd had several complaints about the old iron, so when I went shopping for a new iron it was with several specifications in mind.
First, I wanted an iron that didn't drip, even when its water well was filled to capacity. On some materials water spots can turn into unsightly stains, requiring that the whole piece be washed again. Second, I wanted an iron with an automatic shut off. More than once my wife had called to chide me for leaving the iron on yet again, and with cats that like to jump up onto things, a hot iron is a house fire waiting to happen. Third, I wanted a decent steam system - one that steamed evenly and that could handle starch without leaving little pilled up white nodules on the material.
At $39.95 the GE Easy Set Iron with Color Response (169233) was exactly what I was looking for. Not only did it have the automatic power shut off and the even steam system, but a three way position sensor and an anti-drip system that keeps me from splotching my shirts. Plus, in addition to the standard features, the Easy Set Iron has the adjustable controls that are color coordinated to match fabric types so I can just switch it to the right color and not have to squint at the tiny words.
For basic ironing needs, the GE Easy Set Iron with Color Response is a good all-around piece of equipment for the price.
