Rival 12-cup Coffee Maker Model: PIL-HC08104

Rating: 4 out of 5
  • Currently 4.0/5.0

The Rival model PIL-HC08104 is a 12 Cup coffee maker made exclusively for sale in Wal-Mart stores. This coffee maker is a low end machine with an average retail price of under $15.00.

The Rival PIL-HC08104 is very simple to use and fill. The location of the water reservoir and filter basket, make it easy to brew coffee. The machine is quiet and brews coffee quickly. Overall the unit is very easy to keep clean and does not have a large footprint so it takes up little counter space. To keep the unit clean it is recommended to wipe it down after each use.

The glass carafe is easy to pour and has a very comfortable ergonomically designed handle. The carafe is easy to clean, without may hidden places where the coffee could leave stains.

The Pause 'n Serve function, which stops the flow of coffee from the brewing basket into the carafe works excellently. The Rival 12 cup coffee maker is far superior then many more expensive coffee makers. After over one hundred uses, there has yet to be a problem with this feature.

The power switch is large and lights up red when the unit if left on. The large switch is easy to use, although it's location on the far right side of the unit could cause situations where the units placement makes it difficult or impossible to reach it. It is also difficult to see the light indicating the unit was left on, because Rival has located it toward the back. Notably missing on this low end unit, is an automatic shut off. Any owner needs to be careful not to leave the unit on for long periods of time.

Calling it a 12 cup coffee maker is deceiving, because they are basing this on 5 oz. cups. In the United States, the standard is 8 oz. equals a cup. To be correct this should be listed as a 7.5 cup coffee maker.

This unit's removable filter basket is very easy to clean, but difficult to put in place correctly. Even an experienced user will find it could take multiply attempts to return the filter basket into the machine correctly. The guides that hold the basket in place are small, and do not allow any margin of error.
