The Paul Reed Smith (PRS) SE Custom 24 electric guitar is the most affordable yet fully featured PRS guitar yet. It sports a solid mahogany body, flamed maple top, a glued-in mahogany neck, two PRS designed humbucking pickups and a PRS designed stoptail bridge. It also features a tremolo bar to add a little extra to your solos.
PRS guitars are world famous for their signature sound and tone as well as for their distinctive look and feel. They are also known for their high prices. Fortunately, despite being a budget version of the PRS Custom series, the SE does a fine job in reproducing the smooth, unique PRS tone that other guitar makers just cannot replicate.
The 24-fret version of the Custom SE features a rosewood fret board with a very low action, meaning it is incredibly easy on the fingertips. The only major cosmetic difference between the Custom SE and a high end PRS is the curvature of the guitar's body. The SE does not have a tapered edge like its more expensive cousins, whether this detracts from the guitars good looks is a matter of preference.
The mahogany neck of the SE uses the PRS standard wide-fat profile. Guitarists who are used to a thin neck may need some time to adjust to this, but once they do they will love the ease with which frets and strings can be transitioned between. The neck showcases moon dots, and the 24 frets make soloing an absolute breeze.
Whether you want to play crunching blues rhythms or screaming solos, the PRS SE Custom 24 has you covered. The two humbucker pickups allow a variety of different sounds and tones, all selected via the 3 way pickup selector switch which is found on the body.
Lead guitarists will also appreciate the addition of a tremolo bar. One point of note however, is that excessive use can cause the guitar to lose its tuning since it does not have a locking bridge.
The bottom line is that the PRS SE Custom 24 is the cheapest way to tap into the unique sound of a PRS guitar. As you would expect, the design quality is impeccable and this is matched by the variety and quality of tones that are possible with the SE. Anyone looking for a mid-priced electric guitar for use with a range of music should definitely consider this exceptional product.
