Haier HUM013EA 1-2/7-Cubic-Foot Compact Space-Saver Upright Freezer

Rating: 4 out of 5
  • Currently 4.0/5.0

When you're feeding a family of 5, an extra freezer is essential. I researched a lot of units before I settled on this one and overall I'm pretty happy with it. I would have liked a larger freezer but it was a good price for the size. The only issue I should mention is that the motor is actually in the bottom of the unit. The result is that it ended up taking a bit of space and reduced the available space in the freezer by more than I had anticipated.

One of the best features for me is the fact that you can change the hinge to whichever side you need. I didn't actually realize this when I bought it and it initially was a little inconvenient, based on the corner it's in within our basement. Once I realized that it's really simple to just swap the hinge to the other side, it was much easier to use. The wire rack inside is also adjustable and can be taken out completely. This works well for us, as sometimes we need the rack and other times we have a whole side of beef and need the rack removed.

The temperature can be changed from a range of between 1-7. We usually have it set at 4 and it keeps things frozen very well. Occasionally I'll crank it up to 5 if I have the entire freezer full of stuff. I will say that there was a noticeable increase in our electric bill when we had it set at 5.

It's a very quiet freezer, which doesn't matter much to us now since it's in the basement, but eventually we'd like to have the area finished and will likely have a TV down there. At that point, I'm sure the fact that it's whisper-quiet will make a bigger difference.
