GE Side by Side Refrigerator GSH25JFRE BB

Rating: 2 out of 5
  • Currently 2.0/5.0

We purchased the GE Side by Side Refrigerator for several reasons. It is Energy Star compliant, so it uses less electricity than most regular refrigerators. It has a wide in door space on the refrigerator side for storing gallon jugs of milk or tea. It has plenty of room, as the unit is 25.3 cu ft. The shelves in the refrigerator are see through glass and also have the added advantage of pulling out, as they are on a roller type system. This is convenient if you are looking for something that you know is there, but can't spot right away.

The freezer side has an ice maker that takes up a lot of room which could otherwise be used for food storage. If the design of it could put the ice maker in the door of the freezer, it would free up a lot of space. The shelves in the freezer are not movable, so at times I find myself rearranging items to make them all fit.

On the outside of the model, there is a digital readout for the temperature of both the refrigerator and freezer. There are also buttons for water, crushed ice, cubed ice, the light, and a lock. As we have small children in the house, the lock feature is perfect. It keeps children from pushing on the panel that releases water and having it spill all over the floor. This unit also comes with a built in water filter that is located in the refrigerator and is easy to replace.

While this refrigerator has many plus sides to it, it does have a few drawbacks. One, the water takes a very long time to come out. You have to hold your glass there for a long time to fill it. The other downside is that it has only a one year warranty, and after about two years our model just quit on us. We have tried numerous things to repair it as per GE suggestions, and none have worked. For the price of the unit (approx. $1,100) I would have expected it to last much longer.
