This is not a tool that lives in our tool box. Instead we keep it in the kitchen cupboard together with the broom, vacuum cleaner, hand-held dust-buster, and other essential tools and appliances that we use on a daily basis. This is because we use our Dremel rotary tool for all kinds of household repair jobs and for some of the hobbies our kids are interested in, especially those that involve intricate cutting, carving and polishing.
Apart from our use of this tool, our kids have already found it useful for model building, polishing semi-precious gem stones (quartz and tiger's eye in particular), and for carving soft wood and plaster.
We even use it to trim our Great Dane's toenails! It works a whole lot better than nail clippers which tend to leave a sharp edge. I'm also scared of cutting into the quick with nail clippers, and hurting the dog. With the rotary tool, you literally file the nails down until they are as short as you want. It's such a quiet tool that it doesn't bother him and it scarcely vibrates either.
The Dremel 750-02 is light (2 lbs) and easy to handle. It comes with a small sanding drum, a little felt wheel, a fine sanding band and a carbide stone. The Dremel rotary tool can be used with any Dremel accessory bit that has up to a 1/8" shank. We've added a coarse sanding drum to this collection of accessories as well as a collet nut kit with four collets (1/8", 3/32", 1/16" and 1/32") and an invaluable collet nut. You do need the collets to be able to be able to use the full range of available components, but they are really cheap.
The tool is cordless and has two speed settings, 10,000 RPM and 13,000 RPM (the slower speed is best for filing pets' nails). It's got a much lower torque than regular power tools, which I feel makes it a lot safer for the kids to use.
The 4.8-volt battery is rechargeable, and the rotary tool is supplied with a recharger that does the job in three hours. We have bought a spare battery because when working at high speed, it doesn't last all that long.
I'm about to buy a grout grabber blade for the rotary tool because I need to remove the moldy grout in our spare bathroom. A friend used hers to scrape out her old grout and it worked beautifully.
This is a very inexpensive tool and one that I would consider to be a "throw-away". But one thing's for certain, when it does eventually pack up, I'll certainly be buying another one.
