Calphalon Contemporary 21-Piece Knife Block Set

Rating: 4 out of 5
  • Currently 4.0/5.0

My husband and I received this 21-piece set as a wedding gift and we are quite pleased with it thus far. It comes with tools, such as scissors, a fork and a steel, steak knives, and all the kitchen knives a casual cook will need. Seeing as how neither my husband or I is actually a chef, these knives are perfect for us. They seem to be great quality for the cost, very sharp out of package, and easy to sharpen when needed. Thus far they have remained rust free and easy to clean and maintain.

The knives in this set have easy glided right through anything we have tried to cut. From raw meat, to cooked meat, to cheese, to fruits, veggies, and nuts. It cuts everything with precision and a clean edge. The steak knives cut through steak beautifully, but if you are cutting a more delicate meat, like pork, the super-serrated edge on the steak knife may rip it apart a bit. Even with that small drawback I can honestly say I have never owned such an impressive set of knives.

The handles are small but sturdy and obviously well-crafted. The blades themselves are very strong and very sharp. Many cheaper sets will have flimsy handles and blades and I always feel like they are a safety hazard. They say the most dangerous blade is a dull one and you will find you have nothing to worry about with this set.

The only small drawbacks are the size of the block (huge) and the size of the steak knife handles (small). I do not mind the handles of the steak knives, but my husband has larger hands than I do and he finds the handles slightly dainty. The knife block takes up a large amount of counter space so those who do not have much space to spare may not be pleased with this feature.

Overall I am thankful for this wedding gift, we use it daily and are very pleased with the features and performance.
