For simple sewing and alterations, this is a wonderful machine. I am a beginner sewer and have almost no problems using this machine. Unlike my last sewing machine, which I inherited from a friend, I don't have to worry about this machine's digital display not working and, consequentially, the machine not working. For me, digital displays and gadgetry are unnecessary and needlessly complicated.

As well as its extremely low price, one of the machine's primary attributes is its extreme ease of use. Everything is clearly labeled, with small diagrams useful to keep thread strung in the correct direction (like when winding the bobbin as opposed to general stitching). The simplicity of the model is one of its best features. Even for a beginner, it's difficult to get confused. And the sewing machine comes with something invaluable: a great owner's manual.

Despite it being a basic model, the machine has nearly everything a beginning sewer would need. There are many stitching options, everything from a running stitch to very tight stitches and a buttonholer. Because of it's straightforward design, little slips are easy to fix. Things can be taken apart and put back together with minimal fuss. It's easy to fix problems and incorrectly threaded needles.

The machine is a little light, but has fairly solid construction. The foot is solid and well constructed and the light is nice and bright. It works well even in very low ambient lighting. The adjustable tension is great and, unlike some inexpensive sewing machines, actually noticeably changes the tension when the nob is switched.

Because of its lightweight construction, there are more blips and snags than more expensive models. But, as mentioned before, these problems are much easier to diagnose and fix. Also because of its simple construction, the machine struggles with heavy materials, like upholstery fabrics and denim. I have successfully sewn both of these things, but find the little snags happen more when the machine is stressed.

Overall, this is a great buy for the casual sewer.
