The following Proposed Extension to RFC 2852 was compiled at Sendmail, Inc., in a meeting composed of the following people (in February 2002, but better late than never):Thom O'Connor <thom@sendmail.com>Gregory Shapiro <gshapiro@sendmail.com>Claus Assmann <ca@sendmail.com>Deliver-By:We need DELIVER-BY to control how long a message attempts to be delivered. The current DELIVER-BY RFC 2852 is close to our needs except it lackscontrol over what action to take when the next hop doesn't support theextension. To accommodate this, we intend to extend DELIVER-BY by adding a"by-modifier" to the current syntax as follows:   by-value     = by-time";"by-mode[by-trace][by-modifier]   by-mode      = "N" / "R"           ; "Notify" or "Return"   by-trace     = "T"                 ; "Trace"   by-modifier  = "U"                 ; How to treat message when next hop                                      ; doesn't support DELIVER-BY                                      ; U=Ignore actionIf the "U" by-modifier is set and the next hop does not support DELIVER-BY,the sending system passes the message anyway but does not notify the senderof the fact that the message was relayed to a non-DELIVER-BY aware system(effectively ignoring the by-mode).                 Next Hop ____ Support DELIVER-BY                Does  Doesn't        R       R       R        N       N       N        R+U     R       I        N+U     N       IIf the next hop supports DELIVER-BY but not our by-modifier extension, theDELIVER-BY information will still be passed and there is a possibility thatan MTA down the line may still send a notification back to the sender asthe by-modifier has been lost. Also, the EHLO response for DELIVER-BY will need to be extended to indicatewhether or not the MTA supports the by-modifier.We also recognize the need for DELIVER-BY to be specified on aper-recipient basis instead of a per-message basis but this is somethingfor a different extension (possibly DELIVER-BY-RECIPIENT).Thanks very much,-thom
