I am writing in hopes that someone can explain an ambiguity in IRCprotocol outlined in the RFC 2812.My question is in regards to the PRIVMSG insection 3.3.1 of the RFC. The standard talks about PRIVMSG having several acceptable message targets, namely a client, a channel, a server mask ($), and a host mask (#). The ambiguity I see lies in the distinction between an acceptable channel name, and an acceptable host mask. The RFC states that a host mask such as #*.eduwill instruct the IRCd to forward said PRIVMSG to all@*.edu. I thoughtthat surely "*" or "." would be the defining difference (because thehostmark syntax must have at least one '.' in the standard), howeverthis is not the case. The syntax states that the ASCII chars for "."and "*" are acceptable in a chan name. I.e. you can join the channel#*.edu. This begs the question, where do messages for #*.edu end up?Please help!
