RFC 821 does not comment on the validity of trailing dots for domain names.  It does show explicit dot locations, but it encapsulates "domain".When going by RFC 1034 "Domain names - concepts and facilities", the trailing dot is the legal representation of a fully qualified domain name, and names without are shorthand.
