One of the biggest problems with DSNs -- which, alas, is not addressed in this RFC and should be -- is that they may be sent in response to messages with forged headers. For example, if a spammer sends a message to a large number of recipient addresses (some of them invalid) and forges the return address, an innocent victim may receive thousands or tens of thousands of DSNs. This is especially likely if there is a gateway or secondary mail exchanger in the path from the spammer to the recipient. The RFC should recommend best practices to avoid this problem.
