The RFC 1855 should be complemented with a passage regarding IP (Intellectual Property). It is generally as unlawful as it is bad ethics to misrepresent a person's views when quoting a message in a public forum, such as News or a mailing list. While it is considered bad form to include the previous message in its entirety, the subject matter to which the comment is made, together with any related reasoning, should be included from the preceeding message in its entirety and without alteration. Misrepresentation of quotes that are due to a lack of context should be avoided. The ideas put forth in the originating message is the intellectual property of the original poster, not a free-for-all object of frivolous misuse.
