20080209461 | Small Cartridge Free Optical Disc With High Level of Redundancy and Tolerance For Missing Data - In the invention, e-book information is distributed on un-cartridged small media that can be made cheaply enough for use in free distribution of information. The e-book information is encoded and stored on a read-only optical disc that is 2 to 4 cm in diameter and 0.6 to 1.2 mm thick, the information being encoded with sufficient redundancy and sufficient tolerance for missing information that the disc can be conveniently handled and pocketed without losing reliability of information access. The disc has a lead-in area that is prior to all the e-book information and that contains a disc navigation area, and a lead-out area that follows all the e-book information. The disc may include multiple partitions, each partition containing sufficient access information for independent access of the e-book information within the partition without accessing any other partition. Alternatively, the disc may include multiple slots for files and that are equally spaced. For example, to provide data redundancy, at least some of the partitions are duplicate partitions that contain all the same data as another duplicate partition, and the disc navigation area contains partition descriptors that indicate all the partitions and the areas allocated to each of the partitions, and the disc also includes duplicates of the partition descriptors, the duplicate partition descriptors being stored in the lead-in area or in the lead-out area to provide redundancy of navigation information. | 08-28-2008 |
20080253270 | Optical Data Disc With Multiple Booting Points - A booting procedure can take a long time and typically starts from a lead-in on a main data layer of an optical data disc. A Portable-Blue (PB) disc of the invention, a dual boot disc, includes a second data layer from which application specific optical drives can boot directly. The dual boot disc still conforms to the prior art standard for PB for normal applications. The second boot will cut in booting time for a specific application and will make application software small. The invention is in particular relevant for gaming, for portable devices and relative specific applications. | 10-16-2008 |

20080267034 | (Re) Writable Disk with Electrophoetic Ink Label - A storage medium for storing digital information is disclosed. The storage medium comprises a label comprising a light addressable electrophoretic ink layer. Further, a method for labeling a storage medium provided with an electrophoretic ink label is disclosed. The method comprises the steps of applying a voltage between a first and a second electrode being arranged on mutual sides of a electrophoretic ink layer; irradiating selected pixel areas of the electrophoretic ink for addressing a change of visual state. Further, a recorder for an optical storage medium and a label writer for labeling an optical storage medium are disclosed. The recorder and the label writer comprise a light source and a charging device. The charging device is arranged to apply an electric field across an electrophoretic ink layer of the storage medium, and the light source is arranged to write a label on said storage medium by addressing pixel areas of said electrophoretic ink layer. | 10-30-2008 |

20090157957 | APPARATUS WITH DISC DRIVE THAT USES CACHE MANAGEMENT POLICY TO REDUCE POWER CONSUMPTION - Data blocks are loaded in multi-block fetch units from a disc. Cache management policy is selects data blocks for non-retention in cache memory so as to reduce the number of fetch units that must be fetched. Use is made of the large multi-block fetch unit size to profit from the possibility to load additional blocks essentially without additional power consumption when a fetch unit has to be fetched to obtain a block. Selection of data blocks for non-retention is biased toward combinations of data blocks that can be fetched together for a next use in one fetch unit. Between fetching of fetch units the disc drive is switched from a read mode to a power saving mode, wherein at least part of the disc drive is deactivated, so that energy consumption is reduced. Retention is managed at a granularity of data blocks, that is, below the level of the fetch units. If a combination of blocks from the same fetch unit can be fetched together at one go before their next use, these blocks are not retained if as a result other blocks, from a plurality of other fetch units, can be retained in place of the combination of blocks. | 06-18-2009 |
