20090045977Message management protocol persistent geocast routing - A system and method for providing a protocol to maintain a persistent warning message in a region of interest. The protocol begins its operation when a hazardous condition is detected by a vehicle. The detecting vehicle uses a multi-hop geocast broadcasting process to transmit a warning message to other vehicles in the region of interest. When the vehicles in the region of interest receive the warning message, they are prevented from re-broadcasting the message for a first predetermined period of time. After the first predetermined period of time has expired, a contentious timing process is used to determine which of those vehicles will re-broadcast the message to other vehicles entering the region of interest. This process of re-broadcasting continues until a second predetermined period of time expires at which time the message is not re-broadcast.02-19-2009
20090309757REAL TIME TRAFFIC AIDE - A system and method for providing real-time traffic information using a wireless vehicle-to-vehicle communications network. A vehicle includes a plurality of sensors that detect other vehicles around the vehicle. The wireless communications system on the vehicle uses the sensor signals to calculate a traffic condition index that identifies traffic information around the vehicle. The vehicle broadcasts the traffic condition index to other vehicles and/or road side infrastructure units that can present the information to the vehicle driver, such as in a navigation system, and/or rebroadcast the traffic information to other vehicles. The traffic condition index can be calculated using the speed of the surrounding vehicles, posted speed limits, the distance between the surrounding vehicles and the traffic density of the surrounding vehicles.12-17-2009
20090323579Redundant message packet suppression for in-vehicle ad hoc network - A method is provided for suppressing redundant packet message transmissions a multi-hop message delivery system. The vehicle receives message packets from any one of a plurality of vehicles within a broadcast range of the vehicle. The vehicle includes a buffer for holding the received message packets prior to re-broadcasting the message packets. A first estimation value is calculated as a function of a signal strength of the vehicle receiver for a respective received message packet. A second estimation value is calculated as a function of the buffer. A re-broadcast estimation threshold value is determined as a function of the first estimation value and the second estimation value. At least one triggering function is provided for generating an at least one triggering indicator. The respective message packet is re-broadcast in response to the re-broadcast estimation threshold value satisfying the at least one triggering indicator.12-31-2009
20100019891Inter-vehicle communication feature awareness and diagnosis system - A method is provided for sharing data between a host vehicle and remote entity in an inter-vehicle communication system. Wireless messages are transmitted between the remote entity and the host vehicle. The wireless messages include data relating to sensor information used to enhance environmental awareness of surrounding conditions of the host vehicle. A received wireless message includes sensor information transmitted from the remote entity to the host vehicle. The wireless message further includes an uncertainty indicator relating to the remote vehicle's assessment of an uncertainty of the sensor information transmitted by the remote vehicle. The uncertainty affecting an accuracy of the sensor information is assessed for determining a degree for which the sensor information is to be used in evaluating environmental awareness conditions affecting the host vehicle. Environmental awareness features of the host vehicle are selectively activated in response to assessing the uncertainty affecting the accuracy of sensor information.01-28-2010
20100060480Reliable Packet Delivery Protocol for Geocast Protocol in Disconnected Vehicular Ad Hoc Network - A method is provided for delivering data messages in an inter-vehicle ad hoc network. The inter-vehicle ad hoc network utilizes a multi-hop routing protocol for storing, carrying forward and distributing a data message to various vehicles traveling along the road. The method includes determining a first cluster consisting of a group of vehicles proximate to one another traversing along a road in a first direction. A determination is made as to which vehicles within the first cluster are trailer vehicles for re-broadcasting messages based on vehicle position within the first cluster. An event is detected in a travel path of the first cluster by one of the vehicles in the first cluster. The event is reported to other vehicles in the cluster. At least one vehicle in a second cluster moving in an opposite direction to the first cluster is detected. The data message is broadcast from the determined trailer vehicles to the second cluster.03-11-2010
20100070167SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR DATA COMMUNICATION BETWEEN A VEHICLE AND AN INFRASTRUCTURE - A method is provided of transferring a data unit between a vehicle and an infrastructure communication network. The inter-vehicle communication network includes a plurality of roadside communication devices for relaying data to and from a vehicle traveling along a navigation route. At least a portion of the navigation route the vehicle is traversing is determined. The expected roadside communication devices disposed along the navigation route are identified. A respective time period that the vehicle will be within a transmitting range of each respective roadside communication device along the navigation route is estimated. The data message is segregated into sub-units of data. The amount of data contained in a respective sub-unit is based on an amount of data that may be communicated between the vehicle and a respective roadside communication device during the respective time period that the vehicle is within the transmitting range of the respective roadside communication device.03-18-2010
20100106413CONFIGURABLE VEHICULAR TIME TO STOP WARNING SYSTEM - A method is provided for determining when to issue an alert warning to a driver of a vehicle relating to an upcoming stopping location in a road of travel. Wireless messages transmitted from a remote entity to the vehicle are received. The messages contain information such as position data and other data affecting stopping of the vehicle. GPS data relating to instantaneous vehicle position in the road of travel is retrieved. A travel time until the vehicle reaches the stopping location is determined. A determination is made whether the driver has initiated braking. An advance notice period is determined for issuing a warning to the driver to decelerate the vehicle comprising the travel time plus a predetermined reaction time plus a selectable driver configured increment. A sensory warning to the driver of the vehicle is actuated if the advance notice period is less than the travel time and the driver has not initiated braking.04-29-2010
20110012755Protocol for Map Data Transmission for Infrastructure to Vehicle Communications - A method is provided for selectively transmitting stop sign intersection data to a vehicle in an infrastructure-to-vehicle communication system. The infrastructure-to-vehicle system includes a fixed entity for broadcasting wireless messages to vehicles in a predetermined area. The local intersection data is broadcast from a local intersection device at a first repetition rate. The local intersection data relates to the intersection in which the vehicle is currently approaching. Remote intersection data, such as map GID, is broadcast from the local intersection device at a second repetition rate. The remote intersection data relates to intersections beyond the vehicle's current approaching intersection. The second repetition rate is lower than the first repetition rate.01-20-2011
20110015854System and Method for Managing Geographical Maplet Downloads for a Vehicle to Support Stop Sign Violation Assist and Similar Applications - A method is provided for managing map data for intersections having stop sign indicators. A request is initiated for turn-by-turn navigation instructions for a destination from a vehicle to an infrastructure. A turn-by-turn navigation maplet is transmitted from the infrastructure to the vehicle. A geographical region associated with the received turn-by-turn navigation maplet is identified. A determination is made whether stop sign locations already retained within a memory of the vehicle relate to the identified geographical region. The vehicle on-board device requests stop sign maplets for the identified geographical regions from the infrastructure if the stop sign locations retained within the memory of the vehicle do not relate to the identified geographical region. The stop sign maplets are transmitted for the identified geographical region from the infrastructure to the vehicle. The stop sign maplets relate to stop sign intersection data within the identified geographical region.01-20-2011
