20080250217 | Memory domain based security control with data processing systems - Access to memory address space is controlled by memory access control circuitry using access control data. The ability to change the access control data is controlled by domain control circuitry. Whether or not an instruction stored within a particular domain, being a set of memory addresses, is able to modify the access control data is dependent upon the domain concerned. Thus, the ability to change access control data can be restricted to instructions stored within particular defined locations within the memory address space thereby enhancing security. This capability allows systems to be provided in which call forwarding to an operating system can be enforced via call forwarding code and where trusted regions of the memory address space can be established into which a secure operating system may write data with increased confidence that that data will only be accessible by trusted software executing under control of a non-secure operating system. | 10-09-2008 |

20090031082 | Accessing a Cache in a Data Processing Apparatus - A data processing apparatus is provided having processing logic for performing a sequence of operations, and a cache having a plurality of segments for storing data values for access by the processing logic. The processing logic is arranged, when access to a data value is required, to issue an access request specifying an address in memory associated with that data value, and the cache is responsive to the address to perform a lookup procedure during which it is determined whether the data value is stored in the cache. Indication logic is provided which, in response to an address portion of the address, provides for each of at least a subject of the segments an indication as to whether the data value is stored in that segment. The indication logic has guardian storage for storing guarding data, and hash logic for performing a hash operation on the address portion in order to reference the guarding data to determine each indication. Each indication indicates whether the data value is either definitely not stored in the associated segment or is potentially stored with the associated segment, and the cache is then operable to use the indications produced by the indication logic to affect the lookup procedure performed in respect of any segment whose associated indication indicates that the data value is definitely not stored in that segment. This technique has been found to provide a particularly power efficient mechanism for accessing the cache. | 01-29-2009 |
20090044086 | Error correction in a set associative storage device - A data processing apparatus is provided comprising processing circuitry for performing data processing operations, a set associative storage device for storing data values for access by the processing circuitry when performing data processing operations, error detection circuitry for performing, for each access to the storage device, an error detection operation on the data value accessed, and maintenance circuitry associated with the storage device for performing one or more maintenance operations. The processing circuitry is arranged to issue an error detection maintenance request to the maintenance circuitry specifying at least one specific physical location within the storage device, and the maintenance circuitry is responsive to the error detection maintenance request to perform at least one dummy access to the at least one specific physical location within the storage device and to provide the processing circuitry with error status information derived from the error detection operation performed by the error detection circuitry in respect of said at least one dummy access. | 02-12-2009 |
20090094439 | Data processing apparatus and method employing multiple register sets - A data processing apparatus and method employing multiple register sets is disclosed. The data processing apparatus has processing logic for performing data processing operations and a register bank for storing data associated with the processing logic. The register bank has at least one register group, each register group having a plurality of register sets. The processing logic has an operating state associated with each register group defining how that register group is used, a first operating state being a state in which each register set in the register group is used to support an independent execution thread of the processing logic, and a second operating state being a state in which the register sets of the register group are collectively used to support a single execution thread of the processing logic. Control logic is provided to control how the register sets of each register group are used dependent on the operating state associated with that register group. This has been found to provide a particularly efficient use of the registers within the data processing apparatus. | 04-09-2009 |

20090172329 | Providing secure services to a non-secure application - A data processing apparatus comprising a data processor for processing data in a secure and a non-secure mode, said data processor processing data in said secure mode having access to secure data that is not accessible to said data processor processing data in said non-secure mode; and a further processing device for performing a task in response to a request from said data processor issued from said non-secure mode, said task comprising processing data at least some of which is secure data, said further processing device comprising a secure data store, said secure data store not being accessible to processes running on said data processor in non-secure mode; wherein prior to issuing any of said requests said data processor is adapted to perform a set up operation on said further data processing device, said set up operation being performed by said data processor operating in said secure mode and comprising storing secure data in said secure data store on said further processing device, said secure data being secure data required by said further processing device to perform said task; wherein in response to receipt of said request from said data processor operating in said non-secure mode said further data processing device performs said task using data stored in said secure data store to access any secure data required. | 07-02-2009 |
20090222625 | CACHE MISS DETECTION IN A DATA PROCESSING APPARATUS - A data processing apparatus and method are provided for detecting cache misses. The data processing apparatus has processing logic for executing a plurality of program threads, and a cache for storing data values for access by the processing logic. When access to a data value is required while executing a first program thread, the processing logic issues an access request specifying an address in memory associated with that data value, and the cache is responsive to the address to perform a lookup procedure to determine whether the data value is stored in the cache. Indication logic is provided which in response to an address portion of the address provides an indication as to whether the data value is stored in the cache, this indication being produced before a result of the lookup procedure is available, and the indication logic only issuing an indication that the data value is not stored in the cache if that indication is guaranteed to be correct. Control logic is then provided which, if the indication indicates that the data value is not stored in the cache, uses that indication to control a process having an effect on a program thread other than the first program thread. | 09-03-2009 |

20100235579 | Cache Management Within A Data Processing Apparatus - A data processing apparatus, and method of managing at least one cache within such an apparatus, are provided. The data processing apparatus has at least one processing unit for executing a sequence of instructions, with each such processing unit having a cache associated therewith, each cache having a plurality of cache lines for storing data values for access by the associated processing unit when executing the sequence of instructions. Identification logic is provided which, for each cache, monitors data traffic within the data processing apparatus and based thereon generates a preferred for eviction identification identifying one or more of the data values as preferred for eviction. Cache maintenance logic is then arranged, for each cache, to implement a cache maintenance operation during which selection of one or more data values for eviction from that cache is performed having regard to any preferred for eviction identification generated by the identification logic for data values stored in that cache. It has been found that such an approach provides a very flexible technique for seeking to improve cache storage utilisation. | 09-16-2010 |
