| 20110233386 | SINGLE-ELECTRON DETECTION METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR SOLID-STATE INTENSITY IMAGE SENSORS - Embodiments of the present invention include an electron counter with a charge-coupled device (CCD) register configured to transfer electrons to a Geiger-mode avalanche diode (GM-AD) array operably coupled to the output of the CCD register. At high charge levels, a nondestructive amplifier senses the charge at the CCD register output to provide an analog indication of the charge. At low charge levels, noiseless charge splitters or meters divide the charge into single-electron packets, each of which is detected by a GM-AD that provides a digital output indicating whether an electron is present. Example electron counters are particularly well suited for counting photoelectrons generated by large-format, high-speed imaging arrays because they operate with high dynamic range and high sensitivity. As a result, they can be used to image scenes over a wide range of light levels. | 09-29-2011 |

| 20110255557 | Coexistence of Prime, S-FSK and G3 Devices in Powerline Communications - Communication devices, such as base nodes and modems, that comply with two or more different standards operate on a shared communication channel. To avoid mutual interference, a base node operating under a first standard reserves time using a contention free period designation. The base node allows devices operating under a second standard to communicate during the reserved time by not assigning the contention free period to another device operating under the first standard. Alternatively, a device using the first standard may avoid interference from transmissions generated under the second standard by modifying data packets prior to transmission. A prefix corresponding to a preamble in the second standard is added to the beginning of the data packet created under the first standard. Devices operating under the second standard observe the prefix and recognize that the channel is active. The second-standard devices backoff from transmission thereby minimizing interference. | 10-20-2011 |

| 20110208409 | FUEL BLEND SENSING SYSTEM - While the materials compatibility challenges have largely been met in “flex-fuel” vehicles, the engine and aftertreatment operation has not been optimized as function of fuel type (i.e. ethanol, biodiesel, etc.). The full-scale introduction of alternative fuels is most likely going to occur as blends with conventional fuels. This is seen to some extend with the limited introduction of E85 (85% ethanol, 15% gasoline) and B20 (20% biodiesel, 80% conventional diesel.). This further exacerbates the challenge of accommodating variable fuel properties, as there will be differences in combustion properties due to both the type of alternative fuel (i.e. pure biodiesel vs. pure diesel) and blend ratio (i.e. B20 vs. B80). Real-time estimation of the fuel blend is key to the optimized use of two-component fuels (e.g. diesel-biodiesel, gasoline-ethanol, etc.). The approach outlined here uses knowledge of the exhaust composition, fuel and air delivery rates to the engine to estimate the fuel blend. The strategy is illustrated with a production wideband O | 08-25-2011 |
