20080237189 | METHOD FOR LASER SCRIBING OF SOLAR PANELS - A method and device for ablation of thin layers on the rim region of the surface of a plane substrate coated with a thin film. The rim region runs along the edge or edges of the substrate, and the thin layers should be ablated in at least two, not necessarily unconnected areas of the rim region along edge pieces not parallel to one another. A laser beam is pointed toward an ablation area. The areas of the rim region to be ablated are guided through the area so that in a plane of the surface of the substrate, during the whole ablation process, there is basically a constant distance in the space that lies partly in the ablation area and has its starting point outside the substrate surface and its end point within the substrate surface. | 10-02-2008 |

20090324903 | METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR LASER BEAM ALIGNMENT FOR SOLAR PANEL SCRIBING - A method is described for accurately positioning laser scribed lines in a thin top layer of material which overcoats one or more other lower layers in which lines have already been scribed for the purpose of making solar panels. This is accomplished by means of an optics unit that generates one or more laser beams in order to scribe one or more lines in the top layer on the panel. An alignment detector system is attached to the optics unit and the detector is displaced from the optics unit by a distance such that the detector measures the position of one of the scribes in the lower layers in the area of the panel that will be scribed at a subsequent time. A control and motion system accepts data from the alignment detector attached to the optics unit and uses the data to correct the relative position of the optics unit with respect to the panel in the direction perpendicular to the scribe direction in order to cause the laser scribed lines to be accurately placed with respect to lines already scribed in the lower layer. A motion system moves the panel with respect to the optics unit and the associated alignment detector such that the detector follows the path of one or more of the lines scribed in one of the lines scribed in one of the lower layers and measures the position of the line or lines over the full length while laser scribing of the top layer by the optics unit proceeds in a different area of the panel. The invention further comprises a laser ablation tool for carrying out the method as aforesaid. | 12-31-2009 |

20110024400 | METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR LASER PROCESSING THE SURFACE OF A DRUM - A method for exposing the surface of a drum to patterned illumination from a pulsed laser source at a suitable energy density in order to cause ablation of the surface to form a dense, regular array of 3-D microstructures, comprising the steps locating a mask containing a line of different features on a fixed pitch relative to a target area; projecting a uniform line shaped laser beam through the mask in order to project an image made up of a multiplicity of the features on the mask onto the target area; de-magnifying the image carried by the beam between the mask and the target area; locating the surface of the drum for ablation in the target area; rotating the drum continuously so the surface moves in a first direction perpendicular to the axis of rotation of the drum and also simultaneously moving the projected beam with respect to the drum in a second direction parallel to the axis of rotation of the drum; tilting the projected array of microstructures to correspond to the helical path followed by the laser beam on the drum surface; and controlling the firing of the pulsed laser in relation to the exact angular position of the drum in the target area. Apparatus for carrying out the method is also described. | 02-03-2011 |
20110259631 | METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR LASER MACHINING RELATIVELY NARROW AND RELATIVELY WIDE STRUCTURES - The method uses a common optical, system and sequentially creates structures of different sizes in a polymer substrate by means of different laser processes is described. One process uses a laser beam that is tightly focussed on the substrate surface and is used for creating fine groove structures by semi-continuous direct write type beam movement. The second process uses a second laser beam that is used to form a larger size image on the substrate surface and is used to create blind pads and contact holes in the substrate in step and drill mode. A third optional process uses the second laser beam operating in direct writing mode to remove layers of the substrate over larger continuous areas or in a mesh type pattern. | 10-27-2011 |
