20100181436RELATING TO AIR-BREATHING FLIGHT VEHICLES - An air intake for a supersonic air-breathing flight vehicle introduces or injects fluid in order to create predetermined regions of separated flow and an attendant fluid shear layer. This shear layer forms an aerodynamic boundary for the capture flow with a profile determined and optimised by appropriate injection of fluid. The aerodynamic boundary so generated replaces mechanically moveable solid surfaces used to vary the geometry of prior-art intakes. Use of an introduced or injected fluid can provide an advantage of a variable geometry, but with reduced weight and reduced mechanical complexity. In some embodiments, the injection of fluid has the effect of re-energising any ingested boundary layer, thus obviating the conventional requirement for a bleed system to provide boundary layer control.07-22-2010

20100275592CONTROL OF A SHAPE MEMORY ALLOY ACTUATION APPARATUS - An SMA actuation arrangement comprises: an SMA actuator arranged on contraction caused by heating to drive movement of a movable element relative to a support structure; a current source operative to supply drive current through the SMA actuator to heat the SMA actuator; and a detector circuit operative to detect a measure of the resistance of the SMA actuator. Whilst detecting a measure of the resistance of the SMA actuator and controlling the drive current on the basis of the measure of the resistance of the SMA actuator; there is derived a measure of an electrical characteristic of the SMA actuator that is representative of the ambient temperature. Whilst applying closed-loop control an offset is added to the control signal which reduces the steady-state value of an error between the measure of the resistance of the SMA actuator and a target value. Whilst applying open-loop control, the control signal is generated taking into account the electrical characteristics of the SMA actuator measured during a calibration stage.11-04-2010

20110277462CONTROL OF A SHAPE MEMORY ALLOY ACTUATION ARRANGEMENT - An SMA actuation apparatus comprises: an SMA actuator arranged to drive movement of a movable element; a current supply supplying a drive current; a detection circuit detecting a measure of the resistance of the SMA actuator; and a control unit operative to generate a closed-loop control signal supplied to current supply for controlling the power of the drive current to drive the resistance of the SMA actuator to a target value. The control unit derives: an estimate of a characteristic temperature of the SMA actuation apparatus on the basis of the supplied power, using a thermal model; and a resistance offset on the basis thereof. The closed-loop control signal is generated on the basis of the error between the measure of the resistance of the SMA actuator and the target value of the resistance of the SMA actuator, adjusted by the resistance offset to compensate for variations in resistance.11-17-2011

20100060776SHAPE MEMORY ALLOY ACTUATION APPARATUS - A miniature camera lens actuation apparatus comprises a support structure, a camera lens element supported on the support structure by a suspension system; and an SMA actuator connected between the support structure and the movable element to drive movement of the camera lens element. The control circuit may include a drive circuit and a sensor circuit which have separate electrical connections to the SMA actuator to reduce the impact of the resistance of the electrical connections on the sensing. The control circuit may vary the drive signal in response to a temperature signal indicative of the ambient temperature. An endstop limits movement to prevent extension of the SMA actuator in its unheated state beyond a maximum length which is at or below the length corresponding the local maximum resistance of the resistance-length curve. Control of position is effected using resistance of the SMA actuator as a measure of position. The control employs a ‘ratcheting’ method to prevent a failure condition and an initial calibration step to derive a range of target resistance values. In manufacture, the position of a lens holder is adjusted relative to a carrier to provide focussing on the image sensor of an image of an object at a distance in the range from infinity to the hyperfocal distance when the SMA actuator is heated to a predetermined temperature greater than ambient temperature.03-11-2010

20090004008Blade mounting - Turboprop and propfan engines generally incorporate blades which have variable pitch to improve operational efficiency. Variable pitch is achieved through a pitch control mechanism at the root of the blade but such mechanisms may fail resulting in the blades turning to define a flat configuration with low drag and therefore the potential for engine damage through over-speeding. Traditional pitch lock and counter weight control mechanisms have disadvantages. By providing a helical bearing in which the mass and radial movement due to centrifugal radial force are utilised it is possible to generate a counter moment to the normal centrifugal turning moment (CTM) to ensure the blade remains in a configuration with at least some drag to limit engine rotational speed. The continuous helical bearing allows for a range of pitch angular positions to be used around a full 360° turn by providing a feathering counter moment from any of those angular positions.01-01-2009

The access may be immediately accepted, accepted with a delay or rejected. With an immediate access, current activities may be suspended and then resumed once radio resources become available. With a delayed access, the VMC determines what time instants the access may be accepted.05-19-2011
20110117962METHOD AND SYSTEM FOR MULTI-STANDBY OPERATION FOR A MULTI-SIM MULTI-STANDBY COMMUNICATION DEVICE - A multiple-subscriber identity module (multi-SIM) multi-standby communication device comprises a single radio resource unit that is shared by a plurality of virtual modems (VMs), each uniquely associated with a single one of a plurality of SIM cards. Traffic related to the SIM cards are concurrently handled utilizing corresponding VMs. Available radio resource in the single radio resource unit are shared by the VMs based on corresponding VM states, namely, an active state, an idle state and a suspended state. VMs in an idle state concurrently monitor paging events and concurrently perform idle mode procedures such as location updating. VMs not related to an intended traffic are suspended. A VM related to the intended traffic is transitioned from an idle state to an active state to enable the communication for the intended traffic. Once the communication is complete, the suspended VMs are resumed to continue idle mode activities.05-19-2011
20110117963METHOD AND SYSTEM FOR A FAST CELL RECOVERY ON SUSPENDED VIRTUAL MODEMS WITHIN A MULTI-SIM MULTI-STANDBY COMMUNICATION DEVICE - A multiple-subscriber identity module (multi-SIM) multi-standby communication device comprises a single radio resource unit shared by a plurality of virtual modems (VMs). A first VM in an active state monitors its own associated cells and cells associated with remaining VMs in a suspended state. The active VM measures signal strength on available cells to track cell information such as cell quality and cell timing information for associated cells for the first active VM and for the remaining suspended VMs. When the suspended VMs are resumed, the single radio resource unit is synchronized to corresponding serving cells in an order determined based on the tracked cell timing information. With a synchronized serving cell, a suspended VM may bypass cell selection or reselection and directly camp on its serving cell. Otherwise, the suspended VM performs a cell selection or reselection selectively based on tracked cell information for a cell to camp on.05-19-2011
20110117965METHOD AND SYSTEM FOR TASK SCHEDULING IN AN OPERATING SYSTEM FOR VIRTUAL MODEMS WITHIN A MULTI-SIM MULTI-STANDBY COMMUNICATION DEVICE - A multiple-subscriber identity module (multi-SIM) multi-standby communication device comprises a single operating system (OS) and a single radio resource unit that is shared by multiple virtual modems (VMs) within a virtual modem framework (VMF). The OS maps VM tasks of the multiple VM to OS resource spaces according to corresponding VM IDs. The single OS may run the mapped VM tasks utilizing OS resources in the OS resource spaces. VM ID information is embedded in global variables and/or static variables that are utilized in the single OS to access OS resources. The OS may run VM tasks utilizing OS resources in OS resource spaces identified by corresponding VM IDs. The OS may re-use OS resources for VM tasks of different VMs, when needed, without duplicating the OS resources. VM tasks are scheduled to run on the single OS according to task priorities, which are determined based on corresponding VM environment.05-19-2011

20130148574Communication Protocol Technique for Improving Data Throughput - An acknowledgement technique reduces packet-switched communication delays. The technique may be implemented in a mobile communication device with multiple SIMs. The technique facilitates enhanced communication capability for the mobile communication device. In one implementation, the technique helps reduce delays caused by switching between packet-switched and circuit-switched communications. Specifically, in one aspect, the technique reduces delays caused by exponential backoff that may occur during suspension of a packet-switched communication.06-13-2013
20130150014Background Paging Monitoring For Multiple SIM User Equipment - Systems and methods are presented to support operation of a multiple subscriber identity module (SIM) device. A first SIM may monitor paging indicators while a second SIM performs a data transfer or voice call. During the second SIM's data transfer or voice call, paging transition times are identified to transition communication resources to the first SIM for use in monitoring paging indicators. The transition time may be short so as to limit the impact on the second SIM's data transfer or voice call. When the first SIM receives a paging indicator indicating an incoming call, the device may retrieve caller identification information of the incoming call and automatically reject the incoming call. The communication resource may be returned to the second SIM to continue the data transfer or voice call.06-13-2013
20130150032Controlled Idle Mode Behavior in User Equipment Supporting Multiple Radio Access Techniques - User equipment includes techniques that may improve operation by selectively controlling access to particular radio access technologies (RATs) for the user equipment while it is operating in certain modes, such as idle mode. Once the user equipment is in a connected mode, and operating with significant uplink and\or downlink traffic activity, inter-RAT procedures can provide the benefits of access to multiple RATs. This technique is useful in many different environments, such as an environment that is predominantly 2G or 3G with 4G hot spot coverage. This technique may also be useful for providing enhanced operations in 2G/3G capable dual SIM user equipment running in a camped mode or other modes. The technique is not limited to 2G/3G/4G or any other particular standards, but may apply to any standards in a sequence of evolving or incrementally improving standards.06-13-2013
20130150036Periodic Registration Updates For Multiple SIM User Equipment - Systems and methods are presented to support operation of a multiple subscriber identity module (SIM) device. A first SIM may perform a data transfer or voice call. During the first SIM's data transfer or voice call, transition times are identified to transition communication resources to a second SIM for use in performing a registration update communication with a network controller that supports the second SIM. The registration update communication may include a periodic location update, a periodic routing update, or a periodic tracking update. The multiple SIM device may identify the transition time by obtaining periodic registration timing information from the network controller, configuring a periodic registration timer based on the periodic registration timing information, and setting the transition time as an expiration time of the periodic registration timer.06-13-2013
20130150126VIRTUAL MODEM SUSPENSION HANDLER IN MULTIPLE SIM USER EQUIPMENT - User equipment with multiple subscriber identity modules (SIMs) includes techniques for intelligently allowing the SIMs to access the radio resources. In one aspect, the techniques determine whether a network signaling criteria is satisfied. When the network signaling criteria is satisfied, the user equipment may communicate a signaling connection release indication to a network controller handling a first SIM network connection. When the network signaling criteria is not satisfied, however, the user equipment may forgo communicating the signaling connection release indication to the network controller handing the first SIM network connection. In either case, the user equipment may locally deactivate the first SIM network connection so that the radio frequency interface may be transitioned to a second SIM.06-13-2013
