The upflow filter includes a filter bed formed from one or more layers of media. The media may be naturally occurring or plastic. Further, the media may be buoyant or non-buoyant. Preferably, the filter system is formed as a package unit. The upflow filter and membrane filter may share a common base allowing the filter system to be readily transported as a single unit. Alternatively, the membrane filter may be connected to and supported by a vertical wall of the upflow filter. The membrane filter may include membrane filter modules that are housed as a group in a section of the membrane filter or the membrane filter modules may be individually housed. The washing liquid used in washing the upflow filter may be discharged from the upflow filter through the same conduit as the upflow effluent generated during filtration. Preferably, the upflow waste line is positioned adjacent the membrane filter drain to allow the upflow waste line and the membrane filter drain to direct liquid to the same storage area or unit through at least one common conduit. The filter media may be supported by one or more layers of gravel. Alternatively, a porous plate can be attached to the underdrain lateral in place of the gravel layers. The washing cycle can be a liquid only wash, a gas only wash, a combined liquid and gas wash or a combination of any of the aforementioned wash cycles. Preferably, the underdrain lateral includes a primary gas chamber and a secondary gas chamber where the secondary gas chamber serves to equalize pressure differences that may occur during the initial distribution due to velocity head changes and friction effects. Preferably, the underdrain lateral includes a plurality of chambers directing a washing fluid into the filter bed during a washing cycle where at least one of the plurality of chambers directs a liquid and a gas simultaneously into the filter bed and at least one other chamber of the plurality of chamber directs only one of a liquid and a gas into the filter bed at the same time as that the combination of liquid and gas is directed into the filter bed. The sludge blanket clarifier preferably has one or more flocculator modules disposed in the clarifier compartment to aid in flocculation and distribution of influent. The sludge blanket clarifier preferably includes a sludge collection system for automatically removing excess sludge collected in the bottom of the clarifier compartment. The sludge blanket clarifier further includes a washing system for directing filtered or unfiltered water through the sludge collection system in a direction opposite to the direction of travel of sludge when being removed from the clarifier compartment to free any blockages or obstructions in the sludge collection system. Preferably, the sludge blanker clarifier is configured such that static head of the clarifier compartment can be used to backwash the influent distribution system to remove any blockages or obstructions in the influent distribution system.
