The new foldable system is composed of many shorter rods or pipes. Each rod or pipe is slightly smaller in diameter to fit into the previous section (rod or pipe). One hook (for window curtain) or two hooks (for shower curtain) are attached to each section (rod or pipe). There is only one wheel connecting the original long rod (fixed to the wall). So the friction between the foldable rods and the original long rod is minimized (but more wheels can be attached to the multiple pipes). One end of the rods is attached to the long fixed original rod through a clinching device. The other end of the rods is attached to the single wheel. | 05-20-2010 |

Systems and methods for measuring sample surface flatness of continuously moving samples - Measurement of sample surface flatness of a continuously moving sample. A conveyor continuously conveys a sample beneath a grating disposed at a non-zero angle with respect to the plane of conveyance. The relative distance between the sample and the angled grating changes with the horizontal translation of the sample. A camera disposed above the sample and the grating captures, at constant time intervals, a sequence of images, each image comprising a shadow moiré fringe pattern that is indicative of the sample's surface flatness. The continuous change in relative distance between the sample and the grating introduces a known or unknown phase step between the shadow moiré fringe patterns of each successive image. A computer associated with the camera processes the images to determine phase values of pixels at, and the relative height of the sample surface at, selected pixel locations of the sample. | 02-26-2009

RESOLUTION ENHANCEMENT OF VIDEO SEQUENCES WITH ARBITRARY ENHANCEMENT FACTOR - Restoration based super-resolution combines a video sequence of low-resolution noisy blurred images using maximum likelihood estimation without regularization to produce a higher resolution image or video sequence up to a maximum enhancement factor r for the given video sequence. The maximum r value for a given sequence of low-resolution images that guarantees each high-resolution bin (pixel) will have at least one assigned pixel value from a low-resolution image is calculated. With the knowledge of max r, the system can select an r less than or equal to max r and thus operate without regularization. System robustness is further enhanced by providing a modified MLE estimator that can perform super resolution for arbitrary real-valued r so that enhancement is not limited to integer values. | 01-28-2010

METHOD AND SYSTEM FOR MODULATION CODING AND SYNCHRONIZATION - The present techniques provide systems and methods for modulation coding of data on optical disks, such as holographic data disks, and techniques for reading that data back from the disks. The techniques involve parsing a bit stream into a sequence of individual bit-patterns, and then using the individual bit patterns to select a symbol, or matrix, from a lookup table of previously selected matrices. The symbols are selected according to predetermined criteria that may help make the disk more resistant to interferences and errors, such as surface scratches, and the like. For example, criteria that may be used to select the symbols are the number of reflective and non-reflective regions within each matrix, and the number of sequential reflective regions, among others. The symbols may be written to the disk in a two-dimensional fashion, e.g., across adjacent tracks, or in a three-dimensional fashion, e.g., across adjacent data layers. | 06-17-2010

Two Novel Alkylresorcinol Synthase Genes from Sorghum; Cloning, Expression, Transformation and Characterization - Sorghum is considered to be an allelopathic crop species, producing phytotoxins such as the lipid benzoquinone sorgoleone (2-hydroxy-5-methoxy-3-[(Z,Z)-8′,11′,14′-pentadecatriene]-p-benzoquinone) which likely accounts for much of its allelopathic properties. Prior investigations into the biosynthesis of sorgoleone have suggested the participation of one or more alkylresorcinol synthases (ARS), which are type III polyketide synthases (PKS) that produce 5-alkylresorcinols using medium to long-chain fatty acyl-CoA starter units via iterative condensations with malonyl-CoA. Current evidence suggests that sorgoleone biosynthesis occurs exclusively in root hair cells, involving the synthesis of a 5-pentadecatrienyl resorcinol intermediate derived from an unusual 16:3 fatty acyl-CoA starter unit. To characterize the enzymes responsible for the biosynthesis of this alkylresorcinol intermediate, a previously-described expressed sequence tag (EST) database prepared from isolated root hairs was first mined for all PKS-like sequences. Quantitative real-time RT-PCR analyses revealed that two of these sequences were preferentially expressed in root hairs, and recombinant enzyme studies demonstrated that both sequences (designated ARS1 and ARS2) encode ARS enzymes capable of accepting a variety of fatty acyl-CoA starter units. Furthermore, RNA interference (RNAi) experiments directed against ARS1 and ARS2 resulted in the generation of multiple independent transformant events exhibiting dramatically reduced sorgoleone levels. Thus, both ARS1 and ARS2 are likely to participate in the biosynthesis of sorgoleone in planta. The sequences of ARS1 and ARS2 were also used to identify several rice genes encoding ARSs, which are likely involved in the production of defense-related alkylresorcinols. | 09-15-2011

RESTORATION OF VISUAL RESPONSES BY IN VIVO DELIVERY OF RHODOPSIN NUCLEIC ACIDS - Nucleic acid vectors encoding light-gated cation-selective membrane channels, in particular channelrhodopsin-2 (Chop2), converted inner retinal neurons to photosensitive cells in photoreceptor-degenerated retina in an animal model. Such treatment restored visual perception and various aspects of vision. A method of restoring light sensitivity to a retina of a subject suffering from vision loss due to photoreceptor degeneration, as in retinitis pigmentosa or macular degeneration, is provided. The method comprises delivering to the subject by intravitreal or subretinal injection, the above nucleic acid vector which comprises an open reading frame encoding a rhodopsin, to which is operatively linked a promoter and transcriptional regulatory sequences, so that the nucleic acid is expressed in inner retinal neurons. These cells, normally light-insensitive, are converted to a light-sensitive state and transmit visual information to the brain, compensating for the loss, and leading to restoration of various visual capabilities. | 01-21-2010
