INTRODUCTION OF MICROORGANISMS IN BIO-ASSISTED HEAP LEACHING OPERATIONS - The invention discloses a method of introducing microorganisms into a heap of material for bio-assisted heap leaching by preparing microorganisms substantially without exopolymers on their external cell walls; adding such microorganisms to the heap; and re-activating the production of exopolymers on the external cells walls of the microorganisms in the heap. The invention also extends to a method of enriching the environment of microorganisms' embedded in a heap for bio-assisted heap leaching. | 08-20-2009

PRE-TREATMENT OF FEED TO NON-STIRRED SURFACE BIOREACTOR - The invention relates to a process for the pre-treatment of feed to a non-stirred surface heap leach bioreactor by applying in sequence first and second pre-treatment solutions to a feed to a non-stirred surface heap leach bioreactor, in which the first solution has an iron content greater than 5 g/l and pH below 2, and the second solution contains a substantially higher microbial population. The invention further relates to methods of adapting a microbial population for use in a non-stirred surface heap leach bioreactor. | 09-24-2009

Shell And Tube Heat Exchangers - A process for exchanging heat in a shell and tube gas-to-gas heat exchanger between a plurality of gases, said process comprising passing a cold first gas in parallel flow to a second hot gas to provide a warmer first gas; and passing said warmer first gas in counter-current flow to a hot third gas to provide a cooler said third gas. The invention provides increased minimum tube wall temperature within the exchanger for given process conditions while maintaining a high log mean temperature differential allowing for the prevention of corrosion from entrained corrosive vapours or entrained corrosive mist with a minimal increase in effective area. | 11-10-2011

NANO-SCALE FLUORO-BIOSENSORS EXHIBITING A LOW FALSE ALARM RATE FOR RAPID DETECTION OF BIOLOGICAL CONTAMINANTS - A sensing system incorporating a nano-scale fluoro-biosensor for detection of specifically targeted bio-contaminants (targets). Select embodiments use fluorescent nanoparticles such as quantum dots (QD) conjugated to antibody fragments to form a sensor for a specific bio-contaminant based on fluorescent resonance energy transfer (FRET). A quenching dye may be used to label an analog, while a specific antibody is covalently bonded to a hydrophilic QD. Coupling of QD labeled antibodies and quencher labeled analogs provides enough proximity to produce appreciable FRET-based quenching. Any addition of the target displaces the dye-labeled bacteria, eliminating FRET-based quenching and results in a concentration-dependent increase in QD photoluminescence. Applications include rapid detection and identification, with a high degree of specificity and sensitivity, of a broad range of targets, including viral contaminants, e.g., in less than about three minutes. By using QDs of varying wavelengths the system may be adapted into a multiplexing immuno-assay. | 10-29-2009

Method and apparatus for motion-based communication - A handheld device user may engage in motion-based communication with a target user over a wireless network. In one embodiment, a plurality of movements are associated with a plurality of corresponding communications. Upon detection of a handheld device motion, a determination may be made as to whether the handheld device motion corresponds to one of the known movements. If so, one of the plurality of corresponding communications may be sent to the target user over the wireless network. | 09-25-2008
