| 20110279883 | POLARIZING PHOTOCHROMIC ARTICLES - Provided are photochromic articles that include a substrate, a primer layer that includes a first photochromic compound, and a photochromic-dichroic layer over the primer layer that includes a photochromic-dichroic compound. The first photochromic compound and the photochromic-dichroic compound each are selected such that the photochromic-dichroic compound has an absorbance of less than or equal to 0.1 at the wavelength of peak absorbance of the underlying first photochromic compound. The present invention also relates to such photochromic articles that further include a topcoat layer over the photochromic-dichroic layer. The topcoat layer can include a second photochromic compound that has an absorbance of less than 0.1 at the wavelength of peak absorbance of the underlying photochromic-dichroic compound. The photochromic articles provide, for example, a combination of linear polarizing properties, and reduced percent transmittance when in a colored or darkened state, such as when exposed to actinic light. | 11-17-2011 |

| 20110097705 | Surface-assisted hemagglutination and hemagglutination inhibition assays - Hemagglutination (HA) and hemagglutination inhibition (HAI) functional assays remain important instruments of analysis of virus-cell interaction and protecting efficacy of virus-specific antibodies and sera. However, they demonstrate limited sensitivity towards many viruses, and require significant volumes of viruses, erythrocytes, sera, and antibodies. The present invention comprises new and significantly more sensitive versions of the HA and HAI assays based on observing agglutination on activated surfaces of specifically opsonized plates and ELISA plates rather than in solution. A version of the new assay that uses ELISA plates additionally allows characterizing the affinity of functional antibodies in the tested sera and fluids, which is not possible in the classical HAI assay. The methods of the present invention can also be used to improve the sensitivity of agglutination methods based on latex beads and to develop agglutination methods using target cells other than erythrocytes. | 04-28-2011 |

| 20080221559 | Calibration and Quality Assurance System For Use With Ophthalmic Surgical Devices and Associated Methods - A method for determining a peak fluence of an excimer laser includes scanning an excimer laser beam in a predetermined pattern on a film. The film can include a polymer layer atop a substrate including an upper layer having a first characteristic and a lower layer having a second characteristic detectably distinct from the first characteristic. The predetermined pattern includes a plurality of discrete points receiving incrementally greater numbers of pulses, at least one point receiving a sufficient number of pulses to penetrate through the polymer layer and the upper layer. A breakthrough point is detected at which a smallest number of pulses was sufficient to penetrate through the polymer layer and the upper layer, thereby exposing the lower layer to a detection of the second characteristic. A peak fluence of the excimer laser can then be determined from the number of pulses received at the detected breakthrough point. | 09-11-2008 |
