20090307350IN-KERNAL CONTENT-AWARE SERVICE DIFFERENTIATION - The increasing number of Internet users and innovative new services such as e-commerce are placing new demands on Web servers. It is becoming essential for Web servers to provide performance isolation, have fast recovery times, and provide continuous service during overload at least to preferred customers. The invention describes a kernel-based architecture for content-aware service differentiation that protects Web servers against overload by controlling the amount and rate of work entering the system. We have invented a mechanism that provides admission control and service differentiation based on connection and application level information. The application header-based connection control uses application-level information (such as URIs and cookies for HTTP) to define different service differentiation actions. The present invention provides the kernel mechanisms that are more efficient and scalable than application level controls implemented in current Web servers.12-10-2009

20090024682Determining an approximate number of instances of an item for an organization - Embodiments of the present invention pertain to determining an approximate number of instances of an item for an organization. According to one embodiment, instances of items that reside on computer systems associated with the organization are determined. Instances of the same item can reside on different computers and an identification uniquely identifies an item. Random numbers are associated with identifications of the items. An approximate number of instances of the item is determined based on a highest random number associated with the item. The highest random number is the highest of the random numbers that were generated for the instances of the item.01-22-2009

20090119504INTERCEPTING AND SPLIT-TERMINATING AUTHENTICATED COMMUNICATION CONNECTIONS - Systems and methods are provided for enabling optimization of communications within a networked computing environment requiring secure, authenticated client-server communication connections. Optimization is performed by a pair of intermediary network devices installed in a path of communications between the client and the server. A secure, authenticated communication connection between the client and server is split-terminated at a pair of intermediary network devices by intercepting a request from the client for a client-server connection, authenticating the client at the intermediaries, establishing a first secure, authenticated connection to the client, authenticating the client or an intermediary to the server, and establishing a second secure, authenticate connection to the server. Depending on the operative authentication protocol (e.g., NTLM, Kerberos), an intermediary may interface with a domain controller, key distribution center or other entity.05-07-2009

20090006598System and Method for Efficient Storage of Long-Lived Session State in a SIP Server - A SIP server can be deployed in a two-tier architecture, including an engine tier for processing of SIP communications and a state tier for maintaining the state associated with these communications. The state tier can include RAM-based replicas that provide data to the engines. Some of the SIP session state can be moved to the database in order to reduce the memory requirements of the state tier. Upon determining that a transaction boundary has been reached where the session state is steady, the state replica can save the data to the database. A hint can be received from the engine tier by the state replica indicating that the state data is ready to be saved. Subsequently, the data can be removed from the state tier by nulling out the bytes of actual data, while preserving the primary key, locking and timer information so as not to impact latency.01-01-2009
