20090257751Aggregating Optical Network Device - A method and apparatus for an electrically switched optically protecting network device is described. One embodiment of the invention established pairs of optical circuits between different electrically switched optically protecting network devices acting as access nodes of an optically switched network. The network device communicates different add/drop traffic flows between externally facing ports of different electrically switched optically protecting network devices by transmitting over the optical circuit. In addition, the network device optically switches optical circuits for which the network device is an intermediate node and electrically switches packets between different ones of the network devices' externally facing ports and those of the optical circuits for which the network device is an end node. Furthermore, the network device protects the communication of traffic flows across the optical network by controlling the packet electrical switching to the pairs of optical circuits.10-15-2009

According to one embodiment of the invention, a method includes the provision of quality of service in a wavelength division multiplexing optical network that supports a plurality of bit rates. As part of this method, the cumulative noise and cumulative chromatic dispersion for each available path as a whole is determined, where an available path is a series of two or more nodes each connected by an optical link on which a set of wavelengths is available for establishing a lightpath. In addition, different grades of path quality are distinguished based on bit error rate (BER), where BER is based on cumulative noise and bit rate. Furthermore, a minimum path quality is required based on chromatic dispersion decibel penalty, where chromatic dispersion decibel penalty is based on cumulative chromatic dispersion and bit rate.12-10-2009

20110013904PASSIVE OPTICAL NETWORK (PON) IN-BAND OPTICAL TIME DOMAIN REFLECTOMETER (OTDR) - An in-band OTDR uses a network's communication protocols to perform OTDR testing on a link. Because the OTDR signal (probe pulse) is handled like a data signal, the time required for OTDR testing is typically about the same as the time required for other global network events, and is not considered an interruption of service to users. A network equipment includes an optical time domain reflectometry (OTDR) transmitter and receiver, each operationally connected to a link to transmit and receive, respectively, an OTDR signal. When an OTDR is to be performed, a network device operationally connected to the link actuates the OTDR transmitter to transmit the OTDR signal on the link during a determined test time based on a communications protocol of the link, during which data signals are not transmitted to the network equipment. A processing system processes the OTDR signal to provide OTDR test results.01-20-2011
20120087661Long Distance Transmission Of Incoherent Optical Signals In An Optical Network - A method and apparatus of transmitting a 10 G non-return to zero (NRZ) optical signal over a long length of single mode fiber between a 10 G NRZ optical source and a 10 G digital coherent receiver is described. A device receives a 10 G NRZ optical signal from the 10 G NRZ optical source, where the 10 G NRZ optical signal has an accumulated dispersion that is greater than a dispersion tolerance of an incoherent 10 G NRZ optical receiver. The device further recovers the 10 G NRZ optical signal using the 10 G digital coherent receiver.04-12-2012
20120148236IN-BAND CONTROL MECHANISM - A method and apparatus of managing remote third party OTN & WDM transceiver equipment using the same fibers used for end user data exchange is described. A network device collects management instructions for the OTN & WDM transceiver equipment, assembles this management information into the overhead of a data frame and transmits on an optical link directly coupled to the network device. The WDM transceiver function converts the optical signal to an electrical one and the OTN function extracts the management instructions from the OTN overhead. A processor associated with the OTN framer function acts on that information. The management instructions includes the instruction to periodically and continuously, load certain performance, alarm or informational data into its OTN overhead and transmit that to a similar transceiver at the remote end of the communications link. Network-based monitoring equipment can optically tap off a portion of the signal and extract this information, allowing the network-based device to gain knowledge of conditions at the end points.06-14-2012

20090178098SYSTEM FOR REMOTELY CONTROLLING CLIENT RECORDING AND STORAGE BEHAVIOR - A system for remotely controlling client recording and storage behavior schedules the recording, storing, and deleting of multimedia content on a client system storage device. The invention accepts as input a prioritized list of program viewing preferences which is compared with a database of program guide objects that indicate when programs of interest are actually broadcast. A schedule of time versus available storage space is generated that is optimal for the viewer's explicit or derived preferred content. The viewer may request that certain content be captured, which results in the highest possible priority for those content. The invention provides objects called a capture requests that are sent by the service to client systems. Capture requests reflect local storage management decisions about how the client system storage is partitioned. Capture requests also allow the service to determine content to be recorded by the client system in the same manner that a viewer requests that certain content are recorded but are more powerful than what a viewer can request. Recording requests for a capture request can preempt viewer requests or be entered at the same or lower priority as a viewer request. Capture requests can adjust all aspects of a recording request and affect the capture request itself. Client system operational functionality are also manipulated by the service using capture requests.07-09-2009

20130016102SIMULATING THREE-DIMENSIONAL FEATURES - Image information displayed on an electronic device can be modified based at least in part upon a relative position of a user with respect to a device. Mapping, topological or other types of positional data can be used to render image content from a perspective that is consistent with a viewing angle for the current relative position of the user. As that viewing angle changes, as a result of movement of the user and/or the device, the content can be re-rendered or otherwise updated to display the image content from a perspective that reflects the change in viewing angle. Simulations of effects such as parallax and occlusions can be used with the change in perspective to provide a consistent user experience that provides a sense of three-dimensional content even when that content is rendered on a two-dimensional display. Lighting, shading and/or other effects can be used to enhance the experience.01-17-2013

20080250428Configuration of devices within an instrument - A controller for an instrument includes a control program, an object that interfaces between the control program and the device, and a discovery process. The control program is used by the controller to provide software control of a device within the instrument. The object contains control information about the device so that the control information does not need to be known by the control program. The control information is needed to control the device. The discovery process, upon discovery that the device is within the instrument, obtains the control information from data storage within the instrument and instantiates the object.10-09-2008
