20110117541Method for Screening of Agents for the Prevention of Hepatitis C Virus Infection with Cell Culture Tool - The invention relates to an improved method of screening of anti-HCV agents that may have an efficacy for prevention of hepatitis C virus. The method involves the isolation and cryopreservation of HCV-infected hepatocytes from multiple infected individuals. The isolated and cryopreserved hepatocytes are stored in a cryopreservation bank made up of HCV-infected hepatocytes representing the different genotypes of HCV. These stored hepatocytes then are co-cultured in a culture medium with uninfected hepatocytes, and anti-HCV screening of the hepatocytes is done by subjecting HCV infected hepatocytes and uninfected hepatocytes in parallel to the actions of different anti-HCV compounds at various concentrations. An effective anti-HCV agent will lead to prevention of increase in concentration of HCV content of uninfected cells in the co-culture.05-19-2011

20090196874ANTI-TSG101 ANTIBODIES AND THEIR USES FOR TREATMENT OF VIRAL INFECTIONS - The invention involves the detection of virally infected cells by antibodies or antibody fragments which selectively bind to TSG101. TSG101 is on the surface of mammalian cells, and thus available for detection by antibodies, during viral budding—a phenomenon wherein viral particles escape a virally infected cell after propagation in that cell, so as to infect other cells. To achieve budding, a protein, TSG101 is “hijacked” and misdirected to, or mis-expressed on, the surface of the infected cell. Antibodies can be used to selectively detect such infected cells. Certain TSG101 antibodies may provide therapeutic benefit when administered to infected mammals.08-06-2009

20110251376Mammalian Tumor Susceptibility Genes and their Uses - TSG101 is a tumor susceptibility gene whose homozygous functional knock out in fibroblasts leads to transformation and the ability of these cells to form metastatic tumors in nude mice. The cellular transformation that results from inactivation of TSG101 is reversible by restoration of TSG101 function. Decreased expression of TSG101 is associated with the occurrence of certain human cancers, including breast carcinomas. The TSG101 nucleic acid compositions find use in identifying homologous or related proteins and the DNA sequences encoding such proteins; in producing compositions that modulate the expression or function of the protein; and in studying associated physiological pathways. In addition, modulation of the gene activity in vivo is used for prophylactic and therapeutic purposes, such as treatment of cancer, identification of cell type based on expression, and the like. The DNA is further used as a diagnostic for a genetic predisposition to cancer, and to identify specific cancers having mutations in this gene.10-13-2011

20110008888Novel Genetic Approaches to Reduce or Inhibit Tumorgenicity of Human Embryonic Stem Cells and Derivatives Following Transplantation - Self-renewable embryonic stem cells (ESCs), derived from the inner cell mass of blastocysts, can propagate indefinitely in culture while maintaining their normal karyotypes and pluripotency to differentiate into all cell types. Therefore, ESCs may provide an unlimited supply of even specialized cells such as brain and heart cells for transplantation and cell-based therapies that are otherwise limited by donor availability. However, this promising application is hampered by concerns that ESCs or their multipotent derivatives also possess the potential to form malignant tumors after transplantation in vivo. 20110314976Multiple Slope or Multiple or Multiple Offset Tool Mechanism - Use of multiple-slope and/or multiple-offset mechanism or equivalent to address the issues with current mechanical clickers that have single-slope spring mechanism. The varying-slope can be a continuously varying-slope non-linear spring, or a combination of discretely varying multiple-slope springs. This invention is useful for clicker type torque wrenches, clicker type torque screw drivers, beam type torque wrenches, beam type torque screw drivers and shock absorbers. The present invention is equally applicable to clickers that click in both the CW (clockwise) and CCW (counterclockwise) directions or clickers that click only in one direction. The invention is generally characterized by placing a non-linear spring or combination of springs in the tool body to achieve multiple slope operation rather than using one single slope spring. The multiple slope configuration is superior in performance by moving closer to the ideal case of 0% error in operation. This error performance can be maintained with multiple slope configurations over the entire range of operation. The multiple slope configuration prolongs the life of the product as well as decreasing the need for recalibration as well as increasing the range of operation.12-29-2011

20110150012PASSIVELY Q-SWITCHED SIDE PUMPED MONOLITHIC RING LASER - Disclosed herein are systems and methods for generating a side-pumped passively Q-switched non-planar ring oscillator. The method introduces a laser into a cavity of a crystal, the cavity having a round-trip path formed by a reflection at a dielectrically coated front surface, a first internal reflection at a first side surface of the crystal at a non-orthogonal angle with the front, a second internal reflection at a top surface of the crystal, and a third internal reflection at a second side surface of the crystal at a non-orthogonal angle with the front. The method side pumps the laser at the top or bottom surface with a side pump diode array beam and generates an output laser emanating at a location on the front surface. The design can include additional internal reflections to increase interaction with the side pump. Waste heat may be removed by mounting the crystal to a heatsink.06-23-2011
