20090037941MULTIPLE PARTITION ADJUNCT INSTANCES INTERFACING MULTIPLE LOGICAL PARTITIONS TO A SELF-VIRTUALIZING INPUT/OUTPUT DEVICE - Multiple logical partitions are provided access to a self-virtualizing input/output device of a data processing system via multiple dedicated partition adjunct instances. Access is established by: interfacing each logical partition to one or more associated partition adjunct instances, each partition adjunct instance coupling its associated logical partition to one of a virtual function or a queue pair of the self-virtualizing input/output device, and each partition adjunct instance being a separate dispatchable state and being created employing virtual address space donated from the respective logical partition or a hypervisor of the data processing system, and each partition adjunct instance including a device driver for the virtual function or queue pair of the self-virtualizing input/output device; and providing each logical partition with at least one virtual input/output which is interfaced through the logical partition's respective partition adjunct instance(s) to a virtual function or queue pair of the self-virtualizing input/output device.02-05-2009
20090307441Controlled Shut-Down of Partitions Within a Shared Memory Partition Data Processing System - Controlled partition shut-down is provided within a shared memory partition data processing system including a shared memory partition, a paging service partition, a hypervisor and a shared memory pool within physical memory. The hypervisor manages access to logical pages within the pool and page-out of pages from the pool to external paging storage via the paging service partition. A respective paging service stream exists between the paging service partition and hypervisor for each shared memory partition, with each stream including a stream state. The control method includes: responsive to a shut-down initiating event, notifying the paging service partition to shut down, and determining whether a shared memory partition is currently active, and if so, signaling the hypervisor to complete paging activity for the active memory partition and waiting for its stream state to enter a suspended or a completed state before automatically shutting down the paging service partition.12-10-2009
20090307445Shared Memory Partition Data Processing System With Hypervisor Managed Paging - Hypervisor managed memory paging is provided in a data processing system having multiple logical partitions. The data processing system includes a shared memory pool defined within physical memory. The shared memory pool includes a volume of physical memory with dynamically adjustable sub-volumes or sets of physical pages associated with the multiple logical partitions. Each sub-volume or set is associated with a particular logical partition and includes mapped logical memory pages for that logical partition. A hypervisor memory manager interfaces the multiple logical partitions and the shared memory pool, and manages access to logical memory pages within the shared memory pool. The hypervisor memory manager further manages page-out and page-in of logical memory pages from the shared memory pool to one or more external paging devices. This page-out and page-in managing by the hypervisor memory manager is transparent to the multiple logical partitions.12-10-2009
20090307690Managing Assignment of Partition Services to Virtual Input/Output Adapters - Automated management of partition service assignment to a virtual input/output (VIO) adapter is provided. Responsive to creation of a new partition service in a data processing system, a partition priority number is determined for the new partition service, and, for each VIO adapter, the partition priority numbers of the partition services currently assigned to that VIO adapter are summed. For a VIO adapter with a lowest sum of partition priority numbers, logic determines whether assigning the new partition service to that VIO adapter results in its summed partition priority number being above a predefined threshold, and the new partition service is assigned to a VIO adapter based, at least in part, on whether assigning the new partition service to the VIO adapter with the lowest sum of partition priority numbers results in that VIO adapter's summed partition priority number exceeding the predefined threshold.12-10-2009
20100250863PAGING PARTITION ARBITRATION OF PAGING DEVICES TO SHARED MEMORY PARTITIONS - Disclosed is a computer implemented method, computer program product, and apparatus to establish at least one paging partition in a data processing system. The virtualization control point (VCP) reserves up to the subset of physical memory for use in the shared memory pool. The VCP configures at least one logical partition as a shared memory partition. The VCP assigns a paging partition to the shared memory pool. The VCP determines whether a user requests a redundant assignment of the paging partition to the shared memory pool. The VCP assigns a redundant paging partition to the shared memory pool, responsive to a determination that the user requests a redundant assignment. The VCP assigns a paging device to the shared memory pool. The hypervisor may transmit at least one paging request to a virtual asynchronous services interface configured to support a paging device stream.09-30-2010
20110243134Data Frame Forwarding Using a Distributed Virtual Bridge - Systems and methods to forward data frames are provided. A particular method may include receiving a data frame at a distributed virtual bridge. The distributed virtual bridge includes a first bridge element coupled to a first server computer and a second bridge element coupled to the first bridge element and to a second server computer. The distributed virtual bridge further includes a controlling bridge coupled to the first bridge element and to the second bridge element. The controlling bridge includes a global forwarding table. The data frame is forwarded from the first bridge element to the second bridge element of the distributed virtual bridge using address data associated with the data frame. A logical network associated with the frame may additionally be used to forward the data frame.10-06-2011
20110243146Data Frame Forwarding Using a Multitiered Distributed Virtual Bridge Hierarchy - Systems and methods to forward data frames are provided. A particular method may include evaluating address data of a first data frame at a first virtual bridge coupled to a first virtual machine of a first server computer of a plurality of server computers. Based upon the evaluation at the first virtual bridge, the first data frame may be forwarded to a second virtual bridge associated with an adapter that is coupled to the first virtual machine. The address data of the first data frame may be evaluated at the second virtual bridge. Based upon the evaluation, the data frame may be forwarded to a third virtual bridge configured to forward the data frame based upon the address data to a second server computer of the plurality of server computers.10-06-2011
20110258340Distributed Virtual Bridge Management - Systems and methods to forward data frames are described. A particular method may include receiving a data frame at a switch of a plurality of networked switches coupled to a plurality of server computers. The data frame may be forwarded from a controlling bridge coupled to the plurality of networked switches. The data frame may be determined to include management data, and an operating parameter of the switch may be modified.10-20-2011
