SYSTEMS AND METHODS FOR DETECTING NORMAL LEVELS OF BACTERIA IN WATER USING A MULTIPLE ANGLE LIGHT SCATTERING (MALS) INSTRUMENT - A particle detection system to identify and classify particles is programmed to capture digitized images of the particle generated by directing a light source through a fluid that includes the particle. The particle scatters the light and the scattered light is detected using a detector. The detector creates a digital signal corresponding to the particle, which is used by the system to generate Bio-Optical Signature. This Bio-Optical Signature can then be used to classify the event, or particle. Count rate and trends of the classified particles are monitored to detect a change that is representative of the overall health safety of the water or by knowing the levels of bacteria in process water, such as Reverse Osmosis (RO) feed water, reject brine, and product water, the operator may better monitor the life and condition of the RO membrane. | 01-14-2010
SYSTEMS AND METHODS FOR A MULTIPLE ANGLE LIGHT SCATTERING (MALS) INSTRUMENT HAVING TWO-DIMENSIONAL DETECTOR ARRAY - A particle detection system uses a reflective optic comprising a curved surface to detect high angle scattered light generated by a particle in a liquid medium, when a laser beam is incident on the particle. When the particles transit the laser beam, light is scattered in all directions and is described by MIE scattering theory for particles about the size of the wavelength of light and larger or Rayleigh Scattering when the particles are smaller than the wavelength of light. By using the reflective optic, the scattered light can be detected over angles that are greater than normally obtainable. | 02-04-2010

COMPOSITIONS AND METHODS FOR THE INNATE IMMUNE RESPONSE PATHWAY - Autoimmune diseases are the consequence of complex interactions between a mosaic of host genetic factors and etiologic elements. Celiac disease (CD) is an autoimmune disease prevalent in 1% of the general population, but is unique on two accounts; a) the majority (90%) of individuals with CD have the HLA class II DQ2 allele, the others HLA-DQ8 and b) the etiologic agent is gluten proteins from wheat and related prolamins in barley and rye. The disease process is generally considered to be mediated by T cells that recognize HLA-DQ2 specific peptide sequences in gluten. There is currently no therapeutic treatment for CD. To this end, the inventors have identified a novel therapeutic target for CD and innate immune pathways in other inflammatory conditions. | 12-17-2009

HEALTHCARE SEMANTIC INTEROPERABILITY PLATFORM - A system and method for efficiently linking local databases having different data formats or standards into a network, wherein a content based router is provided between each of the databases and a network “party line” bus and translates data from the respective database into a common canonical form or format so that all information within the network between the content based routers complies with the common canonical form and are validated according to single standard or mechanism, for example when information first enters the network. Also provided is a tracking or audit mechanism whereby each item of information provided with a unique network identifier when it first enters the network, and is also provided with or associated with a local identifier from each local database that originates or accesses the information item and router identifiers of the content based routers corresponding to those local databases. | 03-26-2009

IDENTIFICATION OF BACTERIAL AUTOINDUCER AND USE IN TREATING BACTERIAL PATHOGENICITY - A bacterial autoinducer, CAI-1, was purified and its structure identified. Methods for synthesis of the autoinducer and its analogues were elucidated. Methods of using the autoinducer or its analogues for treating bacterial pathogenicity and bio film formation are described. Methods for prevention and treatment of cholera are described. Synthetic (S)-3-hydroxytridecan-4-one functions as well as natural CAI-1 in repressing production of the virulence factor toxin co-regulated pilus (TCP). Strategies are described to manipulate bacterial quorum sensing in the clinical arena. | 10-28-2010
