20140116389 | SINGLE-CYLINDER, DUAL HEAD INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE HAVING MAGNETICALLY COUPLED POWER DELIVERY - A single-cylinder, dual head internal combustion engine wherein in a single, mechanically unconstrained piston moves reciprocally within the cylinder between the two heads. Magnets or nonmagnetized ferromagnetic structures in the piston interact with magnets in a sleeve riding on the outside surface of the cylinder to cause synchronous movement of the sleeve. A yoke coupled to the sleeve may be coupled to a conventional crankshaft to convert the reciprocal movement of the sleeve into rotary motion. Multiple single-cylinder, dual head units may be ganged to form multi-cylinder engine configurations. In one embodiment, the magnets in the sleeve are electromagnets whereby de-energizing the electromagnets decouples the sleeve from the piston, thereby eliminating the need for a mechanical clutch in a power train driven by the engine. | 05-01-2014 |

20130169645 | COMPUTER-AIDED VISUALIZATION OF EXPRESSION COMPARISON - Innovative systems and methods for visualizing information collected from analyzing samples are provided. The samples may include nucleic acids, proteins, or other polymers. Gene expression level as determined from analysis of a nucleic acid sample is one possible analysis result that may be visualized. In one embodiment, a computer system may display the expression levels of multiple genes simultaneously in a way that facilitates user identification of genes whose expression is significant to a characteristic such as disease or resistance to disease. Additionally, the computer system may facilitate display of further information about relevant genes once they are identified. | 07-04-2013 |

20110080930 | Highly Power-efficient and Broadband Quantum Cascade Lasers - The present invention relates generally to highly power-efficient quantum cascade sources, such as highly power-efficient quantum cascade lasers having ultra-strong coupling between injector and active regions which may be configured to provide broadband quantum cascade lasers. | 04-07-2011 |
20130286388 | FIELD CONCENTRATING SURFACE ENHANCED RAMAN SPECTROSCOPY PLATFORMS - A field concentrating surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) platform includes a signal amplifying material and a pattern of apertures extending through the signal amplifying material. The pattern of apertures includes a central aperture, and a plurality of radiation capturing apertures positioned around the central aperture. Each of the radiation capturing apertures has a diameter that is larger than a diameter of the central aperture. The platform further includes a substrate that supports the signal amplifying material and a channel that extends through the substrate. The channel is at least partially aligned with the central aperture that extends through the signal amplifying material. | 10-31-2013 |
20140029941 | SPATIAL MULTIPLEXING FOR OPTICAL TRANSMISSION - A system includes an optical Y-junction coupler to receive a first modulated optical signal on a wide input path of the optical Y-junction coupler and to receive a second modulated optical signal on a narrow input path of the optical Y-junction coupler, wherein the optical Y-junction coupler generates a combined optical signal from signals received on the wide input path and the narrow input path. A multimode waveguide receives the combined optical signal from the optical Y-junction coupler and propagates a spatially multiplexed optical output signal along a transmission path. | 01-30-2014 |
20140199065 | MULTIMODE MULTIPLEXING - A system includes a transmitter to multiplex a plurality of modulated optical signals and an unmodulated optical signal and to transmit the plurality of modulated optical signals and the unmodulated optical signal along a transmission path. The system also includes a receiver to de-multiplex each of the plurality of modulated optical signals and the unmodulated optical signal and to demodulate each of the plurality of modulated optical signals with the unmodulated optical signal to coherently detect a modulating signal from each of the plurality of modulated optical signals. | 07-17-2014 |

20150131689 | QUANTUM CASCADE LASERS WITH IMPROVED PERFORMANCE USING INTERFACE ROUGHNESS SCATTERING - A quantum cascade laser and method of making are disclosed. The quantum cascade laser includes a plurality stages configured in a cascade structure, each stage having a quantum well emission layer and an injection layer, each stage having an upper laser level and a lower laser level. A scattering barrier is located in the quantum well emission layer, the scattering barrier being positioned such that interface roughness (IFR) scattering at the lower laser level is greater than IFR scattering at the upper laser level. The scattering barrier may be located to maximize IFR scattering for the lower laser level and/or minimize IFR scattering for the upper laser level. | 05-14-2015 |
