20100193066Livestock Water Bowl - A water vessel for providing water to livestock animals in tie stalls is described. The vessel features a sensor for providing water in response to a sensed presence of a livestock animal's head within the vessel. As water is provided to the vessel, the livestock animal is compelled to lift their head and thereby withdrawing their head from the region sensed by the sensor. In this way, the depth of water in the vessel is maintained within a predetermined range. The vessel also comprises a rim that is disposed sufficiently above the predetermined range of water levels that the livestock animal is compelled to lift their head in a substantially vertical fashion in order to withdraw their head from the vessel. This serves to reduce the spillage of water from the vessel.08-05-2010

20090308173APPARATUS FOR AND METHOD OF MEASURING TENSION IN A HANDRAIL FOR AN ESCALATOR OR MOVING WALKWAY - An apparatus for and a method of measuring tension in a handrail for an escalator or moving walkway provides for three support or contact points on the handrail. Two outer or first and second support points are provided by rollers at either end of the support bar. A centre point is provided by a suction cup or other attachment device that grasps the handrail. The centre point is displaced relative to the first and second points by an amount less than a clearance between the handrail and an underlining guide. This displacement and the load necessary to cause the displacement, together with the overall dimensions of the apparatus enable the tension in the handrail to be provided. The use of a suction cup effectively overcomes the requirement to provide a centre point on the opposite side of the handrail from the two other support points, this other side not otherwise being accessible in use.12-17-2009

20100237535METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR PRETREATMENT OF A SLIDER LAYER FOR EXTRUDED COMPOSITE HANDRAILS - A method and apparatus for pretreatment of slider layer for extruded handrails has a slider layer source, a means of conveying the slider layer to a heating module which subjects the slider layer to an elevated temperature for a residence time, and a means of conveying the slider layer to an extrusion die head. One or more control feeders may be implemented for maintaining portions of the slider layer in a substantially tension-free loop as the slider layer is conveyed from the slider layer source to the extrusion die head. A cooling zone may be included to ensure adequate cooling between the heating module and the extrusion die head. Means for reducing heat transfer between the extrusion die head and the slider layer is also provided.09-23-2010
20100258403MODIFIED HANDRAIL - Modified handrails for use in escalators, moving walkways and other transportation apparatus are provided. Handrail can include a configuration for a cable array as a stretch inhibitor that reduces cable buckling under severe flexing conditions. Handrail can also include a configuration for first and second thermoplastic layers in the lip portions that reduces strain and bending stresses and increases fatigue failure life under cyclic loading conditions. Handrail can also include, for the stretch inhibitor, the use of cables comprising large outer strands and small inner strands that enable penetration and adhesion within the first layer and can reduce incidence of fretting or corrosion.10-14-2010
20100283173METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR EXTRUSION OF THERMOPLASTIC HANDRAIL - A method and apparatus for extrusion of an article is provided. A die assembly can apply flows of thermoplastic material to an array of reinforcing cables to form a composite extrusion. A slider fabric can be bonded to one side of the composite extrusion. After exiting the die assembly, the slider fabric can act to support the extrudate as it passes along an elongate mandrel, which can cause the base of the slider fabric to change shape from a flat profile to the final internal profile of the article. The extruded article can then be cooled to solidify the material. The die can include cooling for the slider fabric and means for promoting penetration of the thermoplastic into reinforcing cables.11-11-2010

20080269646System and Method for Detecting Swallowing Activity - A system and method for detecting swallowing activity is provided. In an embodiment, a method includes receiving an electronic signal from an acceleronic signal from an accelerometer that represents swallowing activity, extracting at least two features from the signal, classifying the signal as a type of swallowing activity based on the extracted features, and generating an output of the classification. Exemplary activities include swallows, aspirations, movement and vocal artifacts. By indicating whether an activity is a swallow or an aspiration, the manner in which a patient afflicted with an increased likelihood for aspirations is fed can be adjusted to increase the likelihood of achieving a swallow instead of an aspiration during feeding. In turn this could reduce hospitalizations for aspiration pneumonia in patients with acute or chronic injury.10-30-2008

20090254933Media detection using acoustic recognition - A method and system for detecting certain types of content, such as advertisements, using acoustical means from a media stream. The method uses two matching processes to detect and identify repeated content, the starting and end boundaries of which are then found. This content is used as the basis to find non-repeated content (such as less-frequently repeated advertisements) that are typically located in proximity to repeated content and can be evaluated using Gaussian mixture models (GMMs). The system that implements this method can be used for advertisement detection and monitoring for traditional media, such as television and radio, as well as for Internet-based media, such as streaming video, streaming audio and podcasts. The system can also be used to detect and identify copyrighted material in Internet traffic.10-08-2009
