BIOLOGICAL FILTRATION SYSTEM WITH SOCKS OF ABSORBENT MATERIAL - In an apparatus for treating wastewater, e.g sewage water, the water passes through absorbent material. The material comprises e.g inexpensive scraps or off-cuts of plastic foam. The pieces of material are contained by being stuffed into lengths of plastic mesh tubing, which are then formed into closed-ended socks. The socks are stacked in layers, and the water to be treated is trickled down through the layers. The socks can also advantageously be used for anaerobic and submerged treatment of wastewater. | 11-24-2011

STRAPPING MACHINE FOR DIAGONAL STRAPPING OF LOADS - A strapping machine applies a strap diagonally across a load. The machine draws a drape of strap material at a lower edge on the front of the load to an upper edge on a rear of the load, tensions the strap material and seals abutting courses of the material to one another around the load and forms a subsequent drape of strapping material. A carriage is movable longitudinally relative to the load. Opposing reciprocating sealing heads are mounted to the carriage and move toward and away from one another. The heads are movable vertically between a position above the upper edge of the load and a position at about the upper edge of the load. A strap supply and a strap lifter is associated with each of the sealing heads. The lifters lower the drape of strap material to the lower edge of the load, and raise the drape of strap material as the carriage moves relative to the load, such that the drape of strap material is drawn toward the upper edge of the opposite side of the load. The sealing heads then tension the strap material around the load and form a seal of strap around the package and a seal forming the subsequent drape of strap material. | 09-15-2011

Data Transmission - Data is provided over a network by negotiating a communications link with a network-connected terminal. First data is provided to the terminal over the communications link. Following receipt of a request from the terminal, provision of the first data to the terminal is stopped and second data is provided to the terminal over the communications link. At least one characteristic of the second data is modified so that it resembles the first data. | 08-28-2008
Data Transmission - Audio-visual data is provided to a network-connected terminal. First audio-visual data containing first information encoded at a first data rate and second audio-visual data containing first information encoded at a second data rate that is more than the first data rate are received. The first audio-visual data is provided to the network-connected terminal. A condition is identified to the effect that the amount of data being sent to the terminal is less than the available bandwidth. The difference between the data rates of the first and second audio-visual data is calculated, additional data packets are sent to the terminal to determine whether the available bandwidth is large enough to provide the first audio-visual data to the terminal; and if it is determined that the available bandwidth is large enough, provision of the first audio-visual data to the terminal is stopped and the second audio-visual data is provided instead. | 09-04-2008
Supplying Applications to Mobile Devices - Applications are supplied to mobile devices. An application template is developed as a hierarchy of nested elements and layout data for a plurality of types of element. An application is generated by applying content data to one or more of the elements to form objects. The objects are supplied to a requesting mobile device, such that each object contains data, an identification of its position within the hierarchy and an identification of its element type. In addition, layout data is supplied to the mobile device for element types corresponding to the supplied object. | 12-11-2008

Control System For A Load Handling Apparatus - A control system for a machine which includes a load handling apparatus, the load is moveable relative to a body of the machine by the load handling apparatus. The machine including a pivot about which a tipping moment is produced by the load. The load handling apparatus including an actuator and is capable of moving the load to a position at which the tipping moment is at a predetermined threshold value. The control system includes a sensor which senses the tipping moment and in use, provides an input to a controller. The controller is responsive to the input to influence operation of the actuator so that in the event that the sensor senses that the value of the tipping moment is approaching the threshold value, the speed of movement of the load is progressively reduced. | 02-16-2012

Gateless diverter - 'S' shaped paper path - In accordance with one aspect of the present exemplary embodiment, a system transports paper to prevent stubbing within a printing machine. The paper path facilitates transport of one or more sheets of paper from the first end to the second end, each sheet of paper has a leading edge. A first entry point is located between the first end and the second end that allows one or more sheets to enter the paper path in succession. A first nip is adjacent to the first entry point to direct the leading edge of the one or more sheets away from the first entry point. A second entry point is located a distance from the first entry point that allows one or more sheets to enter the paper path. A second nip is adjacent to the second entry point to direct the leading edge of the one or more sheets away from the second entry point. A gateless diverter directs the one or more sheets of paper through the paper path which includes a convex section that is adjacent to a concave section to divert the leading edge of each of the one or more sheets away from the first entry point and the second entry point. The one or more sheets of paper are advanced to the convex section via the first nip in advance to the concave section to the second nip. | 12-04-2008
