MICROFLUIDIC DEVICES - The present disclosure concerns embodiments of a microfluidic transfer device. The device mitigates risk of cross contamination between working fluids and is amenable to high-volume, low-cost manufacturing techniques. The device may be configured for mass transfer, heat transfer, or both. For instance, certain disclosed embodiments incorporate semi-permeable membranes to transfer target substances from one fluid to another. Moreover, the device may incorporate both heat and mass transfer components. | 12-30-2010
DIALYSIS SYSTEM - A dialysis system includes a filtration system capable of filtering a water stream, a water purification system capable of purifying said water stream in a non-batch process, a mixing system capable of producing a stream of dialysate from mixing one or more dialysate components with the water stream in a non-batch process, and a dialyzer system. The dialyzer may be a microfluidic dialyzer capable of being fluidly coupled to the stream of dialysate and a blood stream. | 12-30-2010

Microreactor Process for Making Biodiesel - Embodiments of a method for using a microreactor to produce biodiesel. For example, the method may comprise flowing a first fluid comprising an alcohol and a second fluid comprising an oil to the microreactor. Alcohols typically, but not necessarily, are lower aliphatic alcohols, including methanol, ethanol, amyl alcohol or combinations thereof. Biodiesel production can be under supercritical conditions, where such conditions typically are determined relative to the alcohol component. Suitable sources of oil products include soy, inedible tallow and grease, corn, edible tallow and lard, cotton, rapeseed, sunflower, canola, peanut, safflower, and combinations thereof. Catalysts can be used to facilitate biodiesel production, such as metal oxides, metal hydroxides, metal carbonates, alcoholic metal carbonates, alkoxides, mineral acids and enzymes. Oil conversion to biodiesel typically increases with increasing mean microreactor residence time. Certain embodiments of the present invention can include blending biodiesel produced by the method with petroleum-based products. | 07-02-2009

Slump Retention in Cementitious Compositions - The present invention relates to dispersants such as superplasticizers for hydratable cementitious compositions, and more particularly to methods for achieving variable degrees of longer slump life in concrete and mortar without loss of stability. This is achieved by using two admixture systems. The first admixture composition has multi-components for achieving initial-slump-enhancement, later-slump-retention, and limiting initial slump. The second admixture composition has the later-slump-enhancing component. Alternatively, conventional water reducers or superplasticizers can be employed initially, followed by the later-slump-enhancing admixture composition. | 12-04-2008

CURRENT-CONTROLLED VARIABLE INDUCTOR - A variable inductor comprises one or more magnetic cores providing magnetic flux paths. An inductor coil is wound around one or more inductor sections of the one or more magnetic cores. An inductor magnetic flux flows through one or more closed flux paths along the inductor sections of the magnetic core. A control coil is wound around one or more control sections of the one or more magnetic cores. A control magnetic flux flows through one or more closed flux paths along the control sections of the magnetic core. Under this arrangement, the inductor magnetic flux substantially does not flow through the control sections of the magnetic core and the control magnetic flux substantially does not flow through the inductor sections of the magnetic core. The closed flux paths associated with the inductor magnetic flux and the closed flux paths associated with the control magnetic flux share one or more common sections of the magnetic core not including the control sections and inductor sections. The inductance of said variable inductor is varied by varying said control magnetic flux. | 10-13-2011

Foot Harness to Aid Athletic Stretching Exercises - A foot harness to aid athletic stretching having three adjustable nylon strap members that secure around a user's foot in the areas of the top of the foot, the back of the foot, and the ankle. The harness includes left and right handles and a back loop. A user secures the harness around the foot and then uses the handles and loop to pull the user's foot in a direction to achieve a stretch or pull the user's torso in the direction of the foot to achieve a stretch. | 09-24-2009

MEMBRANE ELECTRODE ASSEMBLIES AND ELECTROPAINT SYSTEMS INCORPORATING SAME - Described are novel systems for electrodeposition of paint on counter-electrodes, and membrane electrode assemblies for incorporation into such systems. In certain embodiments of the invention, electrode enclosures such as C-shaped or box-shaped enclosures include membranes sealed to secondary structural members by bonding. In other embodiments, membrane electrode cells having bumpers are mounted within paint baths in a manner wherein the bumpers are forcibly biased against the exterior wall of the bath, thereby stabilizing the position of the cells. In still further embodiments, tubular electrode cells are provided with internal valves allowing the release of liquid trapped within the tubular electrodes into the membrane shell. In this manner, removal of the electrodes for maintenance, replacement or other purposes is facilitated. | 01-01-2009
